I am curious to know if verbal reasoning 6 means "NOT AT ALL!" or "TOO HARD" or "PROBABLE IF YOU SHINE IN OTHER PLACES".

Do you know anyone who could get into a medical school with a verbal reasoning of 6 or lower?

A friend of mine got into a DO school with a 6 on verbal.

A friend of mine just graduated from case western med (entering Diagnostic Rads) and had 6 on the VR. I know this is only ONE person, and his science subsections were 14 (PS) and 13 (BS) and a 3.9+ GPA from a top 20 (known for being tough on grades). He told me don't ever go below a 9 in VR. His ECs were standard cookie cutter, non-URM, published, clincal exp, etc.

He said he applied to 30ish schools back then and got 3 interviews. And Case Western was the only one that accepted him for some reason. He said he was really lucky.

I don't mean to sound condescending here, but you could probably retake and get a 7+

I know one person. He was accepted to Wayne State University with 10/6/10.

You can see a trend of n=1 here which means your chances are probably not so good.

This. You can do it, OP!

Whether anyone ever got in with this score is irrelevant. There will always be outliers. That won't be you. If that's your score you need to fix it.

i know of at least one school (wisconsin) that wont even give you a secondary w verbal below 7.

just retake

I know a few at St. George's who didn't so well on VR.

Sounds like you're in this bind:

You should check out the EK 101 verbal passages book and keep practicing until you're in at least the 10-11 range.

THIS. People always want to be an exception to the rule, but unless you have outstanding published research, other unique extracurriculars, or a heap of luck, this will not be you. Please just try and retake maybe?

Berkeley Review and reading jama magazines really helped me when i took the mcat. I started off at a 6 also and pulled it up to a 9 on test day. Speed read read read whenever you have the time. Investing in jama is a good approach

a friend of mine got into Emory and GA College of Medicine last year with a 6 on VR.(he was african american)

My total score is 32. 14 Bio and 12 Physics !.... I'm taking MCAT again...
Many people says that if your total score is above 30 they don't go into details !!! Is that correct ? Or are there computer algorithms that deny applicants with lower VR ?

Outliers !! True but if the number of outliers is luxuriant then they are not outliers anymore !! Thats why I made this thread... to see how likely is it to get admission with a 6 in VR ! I personally think it is a disabling score that needs to be fixed

This guy sees the future. But OP, you really should retake.. I got an 8 VR and I'm pretty concerned to be honest.

Unless you are an URM, a 6 in VR is basically an application killer. The bare minimum you want is an 8.

I highly doubt URM status could overcome a 6.....

I don't think anyone could overcome a 6 unless the applicant is spotless everywhere else.

I am in a similar situation and have been doing pretty well so far, but have a previous VR score that is solid. Is this your first and only MCAT?

Yes, and I would probably retake OP.

Seriously, your best place to start would probably be typing with proper grammar and punctuation. I can literally see why you scored a 6...

EK 101 and retake.

o, not figuratively?

LoL !! It was the first time that I took MCAT and I learned English just 2 years ago !!!
I am going to finish my bachelor next year that mean within 2.5 years (taking overload courses!!)
My first publication is on the way... It is a good one... My gpa is 3.83 from a good university... I did many doctor shadowings and I am an active volunteer with many charities and redcross... I am going to retake exam but by the way do you think I might have a chance with a 6?
I am retaking mcat and going to kill VR this time (hopefully).... Killing for me means a 9 of course !!
Anyway if anyone knows someboddy who got accepted with a 6 I'll really appreciate if he can share with us here...

OP it is easily said than done. I assume you came to this country in late teen ? For someone recently learning English with such background, increasing even 1 point on VR section requires TREMENDOUS effort. If you want to jump from 6 to 9, you'll need to spend A LOT of time to RIGOROUSLY practice. Don't blind yourself with oversimplified visions.

Just my opinions based on my own experience and observation on others. :luck:

thanks for your comment buddy... yea exactly... I studied for one month 1-2 hours/day!
by the way, what is OP !?!!!

Ok every one. Lets continue this topic with this question:

WHAT IS THE MINIMUM VERBAL REASONING SCORE THAT YOU PERSONALLY KNOW SOMEONE WHO COULD GET ADMISSION WITH???

Hearing stories about a couple of random people who may or may not have been accepted with a 6VR will absolutely not help you. I would spend your time studying or reading English literature.

it is my understanding that many schools don't officially consider applications with any section below 7, and many other schools that have a min cutoff for the total score or a cutoff calculated from GPA/mcat. At the school where I used to work, the cutoff was 33 at the time, so you would have needed 27+ from the other 2 sections to not automatically be rejected (getting an interview would be a separate hurdle). So, if youre going to collect annecdotal evidence, you need to know more info than the fact the person had a 6. Another complicating factor is that some people are given special consideration because a professor requested it...you may be collecting outliers that had connections or crazy life circumstances you aren't accounting for.

I just read more of the thread. I'm thinking it's a troll. Anyhow, while your English is good for someone who has only been speaking it for 2 years, it looks like a 6 might realty be an accurate score at this point. What was your writing score? You wanted to hear it: you absolutely cannot get in with a 6 VR if that accurately reflects your level of proficiency in English -- you need to be able to understand patients who barely speak English & have thick accents, & they need to be able to understand you. You have bigger things to worry about, because even if you got an interview, one of the points of the interview is to assess your communication skills. It would probably be better for you to take time after school to do something else & improve your English proficiency. Medical school requires far more interactive educational exercises than undergrad & there will be concern that you can't compensate as you have in undergrad

A friend got waitlisted at his state school with a VR6. Not an acceptance, but he got close!

I would not even apply with a VR below 8; unless my parent was an adcom.

Waiting for someone to ask about getting in with a 5 on the VR Section...

Tbh, I got a 12bio, 12 phys, 5verb and managed to snag an interview at TT-Lubbock surprisingly enough. I kind of botched an interview though so its definitely possible as people have stated (there are those outliers).

Edit: oh and my parents weren't a part of the adcom.

I believe my GPA at the time was ~3.5-3.6, can't quite recall, 29O MCAT (as can be seen from my previous post), EC's were not that great. Only about 400 hours of volunteering (most of it at a hospital). No shadowing experience. No research experience.

It really is in your best interest to re-take. There will always be the rare circumstances where people get in, but as other people have said it is really unlikely to get an interview with a 6.

If you spend enough time I'm sure you can pull your score up, good luck!

OP. English isn't my first or even my second language and I scored in the 90%+ in the verbal but I have been speaking English for a considerbly longer time than you. There is hope but I do agree with the above poster that it will take a lot of reading boring and difficult material to improve your speed and comprehension. Reading a Grisham novel won't cut it. Pick up something less interesting and more difficult.

Well, no; I can sort of back this up. I was on MD applicants, and I' saw scores with 6 in VB that got into medical school. I do remember one that one was African-American.

Take MDapps with a grain of salt. Some people go on there and make fake profiles.

I took MCAT again and this time got this result:
VR= 09 , PS=14 , BS=11 , Writing=P ,,, 34P
last time it was
VR=06, PS=12 , BRS=14 , Writing=M ,,, 32M
Now what are my chances guys ??

I'm Canadian Permanent Resident (I was a medical student in my country before coming to Canada). I have great researches in my resume. GPA=3.85

I'm too nervous that it is already late for this cycle...? I mean because of rolling basis process.

My wife took MCAT 2x. 27 and 29. VR of 7 both times. Got one interview and one allopathic acceptance.

She honored every class the first two years, junior AOA, 260/266 USMLE scores. This is true. I saw them.

Outlier? Absolutely. Possible? Yes. MCAT is only moderately correlated with pre-clinical grades and step 1 scores. It's probably a better indicator of socioeconomic background than anything else. Stay the course, dear friend...

Why in the world did you retake the MCAT?

The answer is Crystal clear ! Verbal Reasoning of 6 is application killer due to the posts in this forum.

Sorry, I thought you got the 9 the first time. I miss read it!

Yea dude... what do you think ? is it late now ? My primary application is already processed.

If your primary is already verified, you're probably good to go, but if you just submitted it, it's getting pretty late. (IMO)
