did anyone make it with a 25?

It's not necessarily crazy if that person demonstrated intelligence in other ways. In my experience, standardized tests lie, though only in one way. I've never met someone who scored very well and was dumb, but I've met some that scored poorly and were smart.

Im actually a California resident so it is impossible for me to get into a state school. But i am very tempted to apply to texas schools. But im not too sure if with my stats that would be a good idea. I hear out of staters have to be exceptional if they want to apply to a texas school! anyone know??

Baylor: 75% Texas residents mean GPA 3.76 ave MCAT 34.3
A&M: 90% Texas residents mean GPA 3.65 MCAT 27
Texas Tech: 93% Texas residents mean GPA 3.63
UTMB: 98% Texas residents mean GPA 3.64 MCAT 27
UTH: 96% Texas residents mean GPA 3.64 MCAT 28
UTHSCSA: 95% Texas residents mean GPA 3.50 MCAT 28
Southwestern: 90% Texas residents

Shuzee, I am also from pakistan and came here after high school. I am pretty much in a similar situation as you other than the fact that I have not taken MCAT yet. I have a 3.4 from a very respectable big ten university. I will be taking MCAT in April 2006 and applying for class of 2011. I have taken practice MCAT and have done horribly in VR since english is my second language. I just hope I somehow make it between 27-30 so I can at least get into DO schools. What I can suggest is that you apply to DO schools, I am sure you will get into one. Internal medicine is not hard to get at all, in fact, it is one of the easiest residencies to obtain. Regarding the MD schools, apply to schools like Chicago Medical school and Drexel and keep your fingers crossed. You never know. Good luck to you bro.

maybe you did poorly in verbal reasoning section of the MCAT because you are not very good at the verbal reasoning section of the MCAT. I love how people blame it on english as their second language. Plenty of people for whom english is their first language and MAJOR IN ENGLISH do poorly on the MCAT Verbal Reasoning. Notice they don't come up with excuses.

May be I am bad in verbal reasoning, but a lot of it has to do with the fact that I am a non-native speaker. I am merely stating a fact, no excuses, I know I have to be on the par with native speakers or I won't be admitted. But being a native speaker would have helped a little, don't you think?

Well, I am a native speaker and a former English major and CLASSICS major - how about that for a whole lotta literature - and yet! I struggled in the Verbal section. In the end I got a 9. Wow! a big fat 9.

Some of my friends/colleagues from other countries (China, India, Russia) were able to score higher than me on the Verbal.

Well it is average statistics...you can get in with higher or lower MCAT/GPA

Well I dont think this guy makes excuses....

When you just coming to US you have nobody to support you, teach you what to do plus you don't speak English. So guy managed to get through the top university with decent GPA-it is an accomplishment. When I just came to the USA I was working two part time jobs (to pay my tuition) plus taking 16+ credits from decent private university, doing research and all the things. Work was more important for me because I had to survive and my parents had no money ( they were splitting up,my mom lost her job and still unemployed until now). The fact that English is not your native language does put you in disadvantage. Why? I'll tell you...You cannot drop everything and just study, you don't have parents to support you,you need to survive and pay your bills. I agree that 6 or 7 on verbal is just lack of studying, and working is not an excuse for not studying, but how do you suppose to study if you don't have money to eat? Plus in the beginnig it is all complicated because your don't speak English.

I agree that poor MCAT is just lack of studying for any reason. What I will do before next april MCAT is take 3 months off just to study. Finally, i can afford that....

I don't mean to be insensitive to your plight, but many American born students have to work full time and go to college too. I know I did.

The first time I took the MCAT, I didn't do so great (a 26). But I buckled down and did what I had to do to get a much better score the second time around. If you want to get into medical school bad enough, you do whatever it takes to increase your score, even if it means forgoing sleep so you can study before work.

I hate when people make excuses for their performance. I tried to do this until I realized that those excuses weren't going to get me into medical school no matter how much I whined about them. There are always people who are worse off than you are.

well once again nobody here made any excuses...i told you it is lack of studying...personally i go to sleep at 2 am and have to wake up at 5 am in order to commute to my job and be there at 7 am, and again I DO NOT MAKE ANY EXCUSES ( it is normal pattern for me for the last 4 years), everybody has to work, but for the person who does not speak ANY ENGLISH it will be difficult in THE BEGINNING-that was my point . I do not make any excuses, but again I did not see a lot of pre-meds working 50+ hours and taking 16+ credits.

And again did you see me writing something like I got 24P on my MCAT because of my language? So,stop blaming me for making excuses I just telling you that I can relate to the guy...I am not WHINING I am telling you about my life...If I was whining about my life I would not get anywhere,so,please don't blame me for that I just wanted to relate to the guy.

I know that excuses won't do it, I need to study harder than I am for VR so I get my score up. That's the bottom line. I was merely stating that I thought me being a non-native speaker was holding me back in VR. As it turns out, there are many native speakers who are struggling in VR as well. So may be it's pretty hard and I need to work harder.

Its very disappointing to see this arguement on this post. That was not at all my intention to start the post in the first place. I respect everyone on this forum but it is saddening to see that some people judge immigrants like this. It is not true that we try to make excuses for our poor performances, they are not excuses, they are mere facts. It is hard for alot of people to realise what a huge transition it is for someone to come from a third world country straight to the U.S where everything from the educational systems to language to lifestyle to the social infrastructure, everything is so different. There is a great deal of emotional adjustments required and that takes a toll on alot of things, including education. These are not excuses, it is a fact of life. So please dont ridicule or insult immigrants by saying they like to make excuses. The purpose of this forum should be reaching out and encouraging people, not putting them down.

Hey--

I don't know if this will help to make the work required in med school clear, but there's an auction for the amount of Biochem (weed out course from year 1 of med school) you cover in 2 weeks up:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6193066818&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MESE:IT&rd=1

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6193066552&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MESE:IT&rd=1

hope that helps

Weed-out class? 😕

You don't need to buy someone else's notes. Just get a copy of Lippincott. Know that and be happy. 😀

It's hard to get into Tx schools with those scores without being an in state resident. That being said, I know PLENTY of people (URM and non URM) with 25s and as low as an 18 that got into places like Tech and UTMB. However, they were all in state...

Before somebody calls me out... I dont know about utsw cuz I don't know anybody's scores so who knows.....I think the score range is 21 to 40.

OP, if you work hard you'll get a better score. It seems you really want to get in, so do not let your MCAT score to keep you down. Lots of schools will look at your MCAT+GPA first, and only then at PS and ECs/LORs. Have you taken princeton review? For me their verbal section was very helpful; I am also ESL (not URM though) (I have started at 5 on verbal and jumped to 10 on the real thing; still can not believe it myself). You are a hardworking person, b/c MIMG is not the easiest major at uCLA (only Immunology can drive you crazy in one week). Even if you improve by 3 points agai you'll have 28 and that's a good score.
Good Luck. :luck:

Agreed. Even if you only jump a couple points you'd most likely get in somewhere. Seriously, go for it....you'll never regret it.

okay after reading some of your posts, i have come to the conclusion that you make to many excuses.

Oh..I'm an immigrant.. well your verbal isn't drastically low so that proves you are fluent enough.

Asl for your schedule when you were studying for the mcat, many people do the same and much more. that's just how premed is. People just don't suddenly drop all their classes and their other ec's to study for the mcats.

My advice? Stop giving excuses and feeling sorry for yourself and pick up that mcat review book and take it over again. I can sense that you are smart but you just didn't put to much into prepping for the mcat; maybe you tried to memorised to much as opposed to building up your test taking and critical thinking skills.

Look over what you got wrong on the mcat. Trust me. Having a higher score will open up many windows for you, and you won't be stuck at a medical school that you only attended because it accepted you; rather you be at one in which you actually wanted to attend.

i'm sorry but you do make alot of excuses. California has loads of programs and opps for immigrants. Try immigrating to a less immigrant friendly state like LA.

I am an immigrant and even i feel liek you are making to many excuses. You are obvious intellegent so stop feeling sorry and start hitting the mcat prep books again.
