I know someone who when asking for a letter of recommendation from a professor, the professor told them to write their own, and then they would refine it together and he would sign it. Did anyone else experience that?

That would be pretty epic.

probably around 20,000 other applicants experience the same thing. I wrote 2 of my letters. BTW this topic comes up on SDN about once every two weeks so you are not alone.

I wrote 3 of mine. It's a pretty common occurrence.

my friend was told to write his own by his PI. I read it...lets just say I was extremely impressed lol. His PI is also kind of famous and has lots of people working under him so if I read that letter from someone like him, you can bet I'd give that applicant a second look. No one can recommend/sell you better than yourself!

Yep. I wrote one of mine. I was pretty shocked and a little disappointed in the system, but I guess that's the way it goes. The person told me I knew best what Admissions Committees were looking for, so whatever I wrote, she would sign her name under it. Totally unethical, but c'est la vie...

How can it be unethical if it's permitted?

It could be immoral, but not unethical ;p
