Hi guys,

Definitely need your advice. I am currently a DO graduate to be and have matched to a residency program starting next month. Unfortunately did not pass COMLEX step II but will try again in Aug (in the midst of residency). Will this affect my residency position? Do they know that I haven't passed, or is it something I have to let them know. I told the department secretary, who didn't seem to think it was a problem.

If anyone knows, or has been in a similar situation, I'd greatly appreciate the advice.

Many thanks in advance,
gigi

Hi there,
Have not been in your position but obviously you were chosen for that residency spot based on your previous scores. Your residency director will know that you did not pass Step II so you might as well be honest up front and study so that you don't fail a second time. You need to find some time to study and work at the same time.

Your participation in the Match is your contract so you are set for this year. If you took the position outside the match, contingent upon passing Step II, then you may have a problem. Again, you would have to discuss this with your program director. If this is not the case, work you rear end off and do a good job so that you are not terminated after your PGY-1 year. Even if you have a categorical spot, your contract is still year to year and you have to perform up to the programs standards. (Failing Step II might be a problem).

Good luck on your re-take

In some cases passing Step 2 might be required before starting residency.
It was a question on my application for a temp medical liscense.
I would talk to your new program director right away. This is something that they shouldn't find out AFTER you show up.
Good luck.

Good question asked. Having taken the Step II exam in late April, I'm wondering about the ramifications for me, too.

Anyone know about the problem brought up by pickaname?

Your residency match contract is contingent upon satisfactory performance leading up to the start of residency. Having said that, I must add that it would be a huge burden for the program to void your contract. I think they would rather see you pass Step 2 and start residency rather than try to recruit another candidate.

Many states require you to pass both Step I and Step II prior to starting residency. When you are a resident, you are operating under a provisional/training license. The first 2 steps are usually required to obtain this training license (you don't really get a license number... I think you get the point).

Good luck on Step 2!

If you were to fail, and have to retake the test in the beginning of an internship (leading to anesthesia in another state), how would this affect your PGY-1? Would they allow you to retake during that year or boot you out?

If you were kicked out, would you get a chance to preserve your residency somehow, or is it back to the drawing board--with the Step II failure hanging over your shoulder?

I think as long as you have your Step 2 and Step 3 passed by the end of your internship (PGY-1), then you'll be fine.

So if you fail Step 2 during 4th year, I would retake it during your internship year. Hopefully you'll pass it, and then you can quickly take Step 3 and pass that before PGY-2 starts.

You should check your school's rules for graduation. At my residency, you are not required to pass step 2 to start internship, but you are required to have graduated from medical school. If you have not met all of your school's graduation requirements, you will not be allowed to start until you meet them. An intern who was supposed to start with my class didn't pass the first time, and so he was delayed in starting his rotations until he took it a second time. He didn't pass the second time either, and ultimately, he lost his position. Also, rules vary from residency to residency, so check with your program for their actual policies.

Just wanted to thank everyone. Tough navigating through this weird world of residency....

I am definitely able to graduate-was only required to sit through the test to be able to walk. The only drawback is that COMLEX is only offered 2x/year. Wish I could take the USMLE instead, at least I have some flexibility of timing the test before the start of residency itself. So frustrating!

Many thanks again,
gigi 😳
