Hi all,

Did you email your #1s on your match list? If you did, does it mean anything to hear back or NOT hear back?

thanks 🙂

Along the same lines, have people emailed program directors even if they didn't speak with them on the interview day?

To answer both questions:

Yes - responses will be variable. There is no consistency in this process except the actual ERAS software and NRMP R3 system.

It should be ok. You should have encountered most program directors during the interview day (except "herd" interview days like MGH, WashU, UMich, etc.). Even if you did not meet the PD, it is ok to send the message. At some programs, you could have only encountered the associate program director. I still would contact the PD.

Outstanding response, non-committal, no response, whatever happens... remember Frugal's # 1 travel tip: Don't pack your bags until match day.

Although for anyone who received a "ranked to match" correspondence from your #1, I think it would be funny to include in your email to the PD that you have already bought a house/signed a rental lease in the area based on the program's promise to you.

hey guys,

Did you straight out tell your number #1 that they are number 1 or is this a match violation? Or are you just suppose to tell them that you are at the top of your list?

And also, when do you think most programs submit their rank list by?

THANKS

Top of list = # 1 = same thing. It is not a match violation. The official policy is "don't ask, tell" for the match.

Some programs may have finalized the ROL by now. Nobody really knows when programs certify the ROL.

It would be hilarious to show up to the hospital after that e-mail and get your coat measured, bring your extended family, a professional photographer, Clay Aiken (or someone from American Idol that you can rent for $ 10 after the post-reality show bubble popped) and oh the list could go on... too bad no match events include April Fools... only the Ides of March.

👍

The apartments near 55 Fruit Street should hopefully be taken up quickly after this advice....I'd love to see what happens there

I received a 3rd party email today that its at the end of this week - though I dont know how much I would believe it....I think its safe to say sometime starting late last week till the end of next week?

When I was applying, I made sure that my # 1 program knew that I really wanted to go there. It worked out well for me. Letting them know cannot hurt.

Yes for sure. Medicine program directors want to hire people who want to train in the program/ live in their city. A happy resident is usually a hard working resident. Of course it may not move you up in the list drastically. Ive been told if you are placed in a certain tier by the committee, the program director can move you up within your tier.

If I had a clear #1 at the end of my interview season, I would definitely let them know. Why not? What do you have to lose, besides maybe your pride if they don't share your enthusiasm?

No. It doesn't mean anything. There is only so much PDs are allowed or supposed to say during this time. In order to avoid any appearance of impropriety, you will either hear nothing or a milk toast response.

I emailed my number 1 program and got something back around the lines "you should be proud of your accomplishments and you will do well regardless of the program you go to" which sounded kind of like a rejection letter! Oh well

So if programs turn in their rank lists around now, and ours are due on the 24th, why do we have to wait till March 18th to match 😕

Oh sweet baby jeebus...not this question again?

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Why+does+it+take+three+weeks+from+rank+order+list+deadline+to+Match+Day?

Here's what that link (from the NRMP FAQ) says:
Why does it take three weeks from rank order list deadline to Match Day?

During that time, NRMP takes a number of major steps to assure the accuracy of both the Match and the subsequent release of Match information. Those steps include:

* Checking the integrity and completeness of the data.
* Transferring the data to the algorithm module, checking it again, and running the Match.
* Verifying the results of the Match and transferring the data into the NRMP databases.
* Creating more than 60,000 individual reports for applicants, programs, and schools, and assuring confidentiality of the information. The reports are then posted to the Web in accordance with the Match Results schedule.
* In addition, time is allotted for unmatched applicants and unfilled programs to make decisions before Match Day.

In the 5 years I've been paying attention, nothing too horrible has happened in the NRMP Match that I'm aware of. But in the Urology Match the year before I matched there was a huge FUBAR that resulted in Hopkins and HMS grads with 250s on both Steps, PhDs and AOA not matching. So they had to rescind the results and run it again. Waiting 3 weeks is WAY better than that scenario.

Hmm, if the match algorithm was run correctly and those candidates didn't match, I don't see why they would "have to" rescind the results. If they only applied to top 5 programs and didn't match, that is the way it goes sometimes. I assume and hope there was an actual error in the way the algorithm was run itself.

It wasn't. There was a clear error in the match process. I don't believe the exact problem was revealed, but they "re-ran" the match with the correct algorithm and got different results - thus the rescindences.

My question is do the programs know what you ranked them once you match there? I doubt it...but not sure?

No I think they just essentially get the results of where everyone they ranked got matched to. I don't think they get the details of any of the applicants rank lists themselves. But obviously if someone high on their list matched to somewhere else, then that candidate obviously did not rank them #1.
