Hi everyone,

I just came off a pretty bad semester. I failed organic chemistry I. A total mess-up. An E. I'm a sophomore at University of Michigan and I was wondering if anybody else who went to a university failed a class and how greatly an impact this will have on my chances of getting into dental school. Let's say from here on out I do not get a grade lower than a B in all my classes (science and non-science)... Do I still have a chance at all of getting into a D-School?

Thanks,

Michael

From a friend who failed organic one, be prepared to retake and score nothing less than an A-. When hopefully you get an interview, be prepared to give a reason why you failed

Did your friend get accepted to a dental school and if he did, which school was it?

It depends on. If you failed the course because you have been lazy or slacked off a lot then this can be a huge harm. If there're reasonable excuses, then it should be fine.

consider it a turning point. if you failed because you didn't put the effort into orgo (and it requires persistent effort, not last minute cramming), then resolve to improve your study habits from here on out. if you failed because you are stupid, well i just don't believe that and neither should you.

applying to dental school is like running a marathon (4 years of GPA, DAT, volunteering, shadowing, ECs, LORs, etc) and failing orgo is like throwing kramer's cup of coffee in your face when you thought it was water. sure it burns, but you can still finish the race.

My first semester of school at a junior college I totaly blew off a Communications class, I had qualms with the teacher and missed the drop date. Got a big stinking F, that was 4 years ago. I explained the F on my application got a 3.85 the next semester took the class over got an A. Pick yourself up dust yourself off.

Excellent analogy 🙂
I never failed one but did have 3 C's, one in a required course (biochemistry). I dont think they cared about the other 2 because they were in impossible courses. But, i got in so my advise is ROCK the DAT. Take a course spend several months studying and score off the charts. And, also retake orgo and get an A. Doing awesome on DAT wont make up for bad grades but it will help cover up 1 or 2 🙂

thanks a lot guys, this is really helpful and boosting information!!! I wont' give up!

Is organic hard at mich?

Yeah, at Umich Organic Chem I is the most failed class on campus. 1/4 of the people who take it fail it. Which is approximiately 1500 people. 🙁

I agree on the part that organic chem CANNOT be crammed for.. (which unfortunately I had to learn the hard way) It's definitely something you have to consistently study for, 4 hours a night, 7 days a week if you want a guaranteed A.

I never had a D or an F, but I did get a C- once. I'm sure you are not alone. Just retake it and do better (esp in summer so you can focus on it if it's offered) Good luck to you.

your dental career is not over... i have never failed a class but i did get 2 C- in the same class 😡 ..gen chem 1.... i took this during my freshman yr, once in the fall and again in the spring when i wasn't a really great student mentally... i wanted to take that class again along with organic chemistry this fall... when i asked the chem department head, he told me that i didn't have enough knowledge in gen chem to take ochem 1 as well... i thanked him for his honest opinion but still went ahead and took it...i got an A- in gen chem and a B+ in ochem... i was determined that no one would tell me i couldn't do this... i studied so hard sometimes i would burst into tears from being so overly stressed... i had a million things to do that were no academic in terms of extracurricular plus i was taking 4 other classes...so you just have to pull yourself up by your boot straps, rethink it and be mentally prepared. I always take time to think hard about the classes i am going to take and develop a plan. The one thing i learnt is never be scared of a class despite what others have told you about it and you'll succeed if you put in the necessary hard work.

i failed calculus-retook it got a c+
got c's in physux 1+2
got a c in chem 2 honors and honors lab

While in Junior College I failed:
Sociology, Microbiology, Organic Chemistry (1st semester) Lecture.
I withdrew from Precalculus.
When I retook these classes I got a B in Soc, B in Micro, C in O Chem, and B in Precalculus.
I ended there with a 2.8.

BUT there was an upward trend in my academic career - which is what they look for! While at a University I did much better earning almost a 3.5 GPA.

This was my first year applying to dental school and I am in.

GRADES are not EVERYTHING!!

I know the feeling Altho i didnt fail anythig this semester it sure felt like i did. I got an A in micro, B+ in bioscience, D+ in calc1 C+ in chem 1 B in spanish. Calc 1 an chem one i was workin my butt off in. Chem alone i was putting in an honest 9-11 hours a week of studying. When i got my final grade i felt like i had nothing to show for my efforts. But a friend whos in med school told me dont worry about it. Personally i think i would have done better if i didnt load myself up the way i did.

That's beauty and wonder of getting a secod chance!

I got 2 D's....both in pre-reqs....retook them and got A's. I have had 2 interviews and no acceptances yet. I'm retaking the DAT with hopes of acing the sections in which my D's came (bio and organic) to show that those D's were merely due to lack of motivation and being a stupid freshman frat-daddy 🙂

good luck & keep your head up! it is still possible to have a great GPA (mine is over a 3.6 with those D's averaged in!)

jb!🙂

I almost failed Ethics. I was like 2 points away from failing. But hey I got into Dental school so i guess it didnt really matter.

omg! i just got an F in psychology and a D in chemistry (not the gen. chem.) psychology was super easy and i aced everything until i got sick and i gave my packets and scantrons for my friend to turn in and i just found out that he completely forgot as i checked my grades online and now i have an F. tomorrow im going to contact the teacher and see if i can get it switched somehow, i don't know. anyway, the D in chemistry was just laziness. i guess, i sorta lost my motivation for a while last semester when a lot of my friends from universities were telling me their college stories and i felt really inferior and stupid by going to a community college. eh...lesson learned. anyway, next semester im going for A's. you guys got any advice? do you think i still got a good shot at a good dental school? im hating myself right now for this. 😡

Hey! I went to Umich and actually i know quite a few people who screwed up at orgo. They retook it and aced it.. i dunno what happened to them after that, but i'd probably recommend doing that. Just know that even though it is one of the most failed course in the lsa department, its definitely not the hardest class..

That was 10 years ago. I retook the full year at night last year and did well. Also got a 21 in organic on the DAT. So far only one interview and no acceptances. I'm praying. If I don't get in, I'm looking at a Masters to improve my chances for 2008 and I'm too old to be going back to school unless it's DENTAL school....

Where did you get into dental school? that is awesome that you got in! congrats! I have a 3.05 currently because I failed Organic 2 (but I do plan on retaking it this summer b4 I apply) but can raise it to a 3.25 by the time I apply...and I just took my DAT and have 18 AA/18 TS/19 PAT. Do you think I should take the DAT again to better my chances?

hi,
Im curretly in the same situation as you , and im really stressed thinking theres probably not a chance for me to get accepted to a dental school in the US, considering ijm a canadian citizen ( will be considered international and can only apply to 12 dental schools). I attended a different university during my first 2 years, I was all alone in a new city with 2 of my roomates whom i got swine flue from , got swine flue which i had to stay in the house for a whole month so missed many of classes ( however bc i was not a resident in that province I dont have a proof of my sickness 🙁).I transfered to a different university andhave been getting Mostly A's and B+s (I mostly took 3-4 courses per semester). Ihave great volunteering, shadowing experence and will do great on dat. But considering these obstacles do i even stand a chance? or should i just give up on the us AND go study dental in australia or ireland? 🙁

hi , IS THERE any way i can ask you a couple of questions regarding dental school? Im currently in the same situation as you and im extremely stressed and clueless 🙁
