I want to let you know about an amazing position at the Moran Eye Center for anyone who didn’t match. I was there 1 year ago. Not matching is an horrible experience, but you can definitely still match into ophthalmology. That said, what you do in these first 2-3 weeks will be critical to your ability to successfully match in the future. You have several options from doing research to taking a PGY-1 position. Having been there 1 year ago, I would highly recommend pursuing a pre-residency fellowship as you need to do everything possible to improve your application before next year. While there are several great options, one of the best fellowships in the country is with Dr. Bala Ambati, a cornea specialist at the Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is a hybrid clinical/research fellowship, where 30% of your time is devoted to seeing patients in the clinic and 70% of your time is working on translational and clinical research projects. What really distinguishes this position from almost all the other pre-residency positions in the country is the hands-on clinical experience. As the fellow, you will see patients with Dr. Ambati 2-3 half-days per week, where you will assist in seeing patients, perform minor procedures, write notes, prescribe medications, and refine your ophthalmic exam skills over the course of the year. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to assist in the OR every 3-4 weeks. On the research side, you will be conducting cutting edge translational research and publishing in high impact journals with the opportunity to present at national conferences. Even if you have never worked on bench research, you should definitely apply. At this point, your board scores and grades are set, but you can really enhance your application with meaningful research on top of the clinical experience you will gain in this fellowship. Let me know if you have any questions by replying to this thread emailing me at [email protected] or contacting Dr. Ambati at [email protected].
