Well this year's a bust..so Im trying to do all I can for next years MATCH. I didnt plan to be in this position, so can someone tell me what I can do during the course of the next 15 months to improve my chances of matching next year? I know research and getting published would be great, but where should I start? Is there a directory of research postions available? It seems as though all these positions require experience. Other than research, what else can a recent medical grad do with him/herself? Thanks for ANY input.

What city do you live in and what are you trying to get in to?

This is not a cheap plug for my blog but several of my last articles describe not matching and what I did and should have done. (I didn't match last year but matched this year into Emergency Medicine)

ive heard that johnny walker or jim beam are always available for a good time...

radonc, already exhausted my supplies..what now?

pandabear, thanks for the info..but i think all the transitional and prelim spots were taken in the scramble. i tried, believe me this year was tough. Know of any MD friendly research positions?

serenity, I would like to go into peds, but i wouldnt mind FP either. and Im in canada right now, but will be relocating to the Boston/ providence area soon bc thats where my partner matched and i would like to find work there if i can.

Any info (websites, hospitals or institutions, phone #) is appreciated. Thanks

I don't know much about Boston, but I would like to give you hope. My friend is from Greece and was in a similar position except he wanted to do medicine. He dressed up nice and went to MD Anderson in Houston without knowing anyone beforehand and found faculty willing to let him participate in research. He got to be the co-author of two heme/onc papers and he matched this year to a strong university based program.

What the hell are you matching into 15 months from now? Apps start in 5 months, you better get something down (classwork, boards, research, quickie something-or-other) pronto. Apply early and often.

If you wouldn't mind fp, why didn't you scramble into one of the available spots? Seems like there were hundreds available.

For research, try some of the community hospitals that have research departments. Sometimes they are more amenable to MD researchers sans experience than the big academic centers.

Good luck.

IMO, better to live in a place temporarily than to go without a residency position.
