Difference b/w Prelim and Transitional year?

Can anyone explain this to me? I'm applying to EM, with some programs being PGY 2-4. So do I apply for a prelim spot or transitional one? Or does it not matter? Clarification would be greatly appreciated on this confusing topic.

It doesn't matter which you choose. Transitional programs have a more flexible schedule. For a prelim, it is pretty much what an intern in medicine or surgery would do.
