Difference between abrasion & recession from periodontitis

Hi all, hope everyone's doing well and surviving this crazy year in dental school. I am a little confused on how to tell the difference between just plain abrasion on teeth, and recession which is due to periodontitis. Can anyone help me out? Appreciate it!

Presence of inflammation or bleeding on probing together with CAL is a sign of active periodontitis
