Can someone tell me the differences between the Learned Helplesness and Learned Hopelesness models of major depression? I know that in the Learned Hoplessness model, the person experiences anxiety secondary to an inescapable, aversive stimulus which leads to anxiety and then depression but am not sure about the Learned Helplessness model

Thanks

While these were once some of my favorite papers, it has been quite awhile since I've read them. This week is packed pretty solid, but if no one has replied by this weekend I will see if I can find time to dig them up and sort out the nuances of it. It would be good to get back into this - its fascinating stuff but since my focus has shifted I've sort of lost touch with depression research.

Unfortunately, I don't have the time to write a detailed response. But I think you've confused yourself a bit with your language. It will be easier to look up with these terms:

Learned Helplessness - which derived from animal models concerning the development of helplessness in response to an uncontrolled aversive stimulus.

Hopelessness Theory of Depression - Abramson and Alloy's cognitive-vulnerability model of depression, implicating negative attributional style as a risk factor for the development of what they call "hopelessness depression."

You can find a lot online...
