Hi,
I'm one of the students who was not accepted into optometry school this year. However, I do plan on applying again next year. I already spoke with the counselors from the schools I was rejected from and got some advice on how to improve my application for next year. One of the suggestions made to me was to try to gain experience working/volunteering in different optometric settings. I currently work as an optician in a retail setting and I have a second job as an assistant for doctors in a private practice. I was wondering, what other modes of practice are out there in which it is possible to gain experience in?

hey alicia, The different modes of optometry consists of 1. visual therapy, 2. sports vision, 3. contact lenses, 4. computer vision, 5. general practice, 6. private office practice, 7. low vision therapy, and etc. I was in the same boat as you, however, after my first rejection i realize that its not the amount of exposure to the different types or modes that I had, rather, its what I knew about the profession. From what you stated, you seemed to have received an interview meaning that your academic performance is competitive, however, its the interview that got you. From what i have deduced, they are telling you to investigate all types of optometry practice because the person that interviewed you did not see that you have any compassion for the field and that you have not done enough research about the field. For me, i went in my interviews with only 1 month of experience at a vision center specializing in visual therapy, however, i knew all about the eye diseases, the types of treatments, the connection between optican, optometry, and opthomologist. I knew about the recent legislations and many more stuff about the profession, and i got accepted to all the schools after my first failure. Hope these tips will help if you have any questions you can email me. Good luck
