i just wondered how other people /groups in private practice handle different levels of skills or training, eg. do you pay people with fellowshiptraining or special abilities as pain , regional skills or tee more? how do you handle a rather tricky issue?
appreciate your thoughts as we are in negotiations currently. 😕

Our group assigns a relative value for each SHIFT, with a value of 1 for a 7-3 day shift. Everything else is relative to that. A night shift pays more, weekend nights and holidays pay the most. The pain docs have a value assigned to their work as well. The points are added up for all partners. Revenue for the month is totalled, overhead and reserve subtracted out. The $ amount remaining is divided by the total # of points for all partners combined to give a $ value for each point. Simply multiply each partner's individual point total by the $ value for each point and you have your compensation for the month. So for example - if your point value is $1000 and you worked straight days all month, you would have 20 points and therefore $20,000 for the month.

A couple of catches - income varies from month to month based on collections, and you don't get paid if you don't actually work, but each partner is required to take the same amount of vacation time. Want more time off? There are those perfectly willing to give their vacation time up for $$$.

thank you jwk, but your answer does not mention how the pay for pain physicians is calculated. do they receive a similar point value to one day in the pain clinic as in the or or is a distinction being made?

Doesn't the ASA Relative Value Guide discuss how pain stuff is billed? If you're a resident, find a pain guy or your billing guru and ask him/her.
