We all come across them from time to time, ESPECIALLY in the field of pharmacy but how do you guys deal with these type of ppl. There really is no excuse in treating ppl rudely no matter what they r going through. How do you not let it affect you so much?

Advice:

1. Drink heavily
2. Kick your dog
3. Beat your wife
4. Stay strapped
5. Be a caustic ******* on SDN forums

I just remember that I'm a much better person than the common riff and that I have enough money to walk away from my job anytime I want.

OPs point is valid. For some reason, pharmacy attracts very rude, narcissistic personalities. Any site I went for my rotation and now at my new job, only 20% of the staff are personable and willing to help.

Without fail, the rest are just indifferent or just plain rude. It would be interesting to hear other peoples insight to this.

Edit: Advise to OP, never let rude pple get to you, easy as that. There is a lot of wisdom in "kill em with kindness" unless they are really hindering your work. Pick and choose your battles wisely. That said, dont be a doormat.

I found this to be the case in nearly all the pharmacies I've been in as well. While it can be depressing, it really is their problem in the end. If someone constantly has an attitude, they likely aren't happy with their life. I then usually end up feeling more sorry for them and it makes my frustration disappear.

Y'know, with few exceptions, this has been my observational experience with many people in the healthcare industry as a whole. Big fish, little pond syndrome. Is pharmacy on a different level?

Are you talking about customers or fellow employees? As for customers, it's a rarity that I remain upset about something after I get out of work. I find I dwell on it if there's nothing else in my life to think about, so I get up and do something. Go work out, go see a movie, go out to eat, go hang out with friends, plan your next vacation... do something fun and soon you will forget about it.

As for fellow employees being rude, after talking it out and nothing changing, I finally got the courage to just quit. I don't regret it. I wish I did it sooner. Sometimes people don't change, so you need to change what you can yourself.

I think I am the one exception here since I have a very good team at work. When I first started gossip and backbiting was common, as well as slacking off, and complaining about life. I am not the manager but I spoke to the staff in one-to-one discussions and told them my expectations. They didn't listen the first time but they did the second. I am very happy with my team now, we forgive each other's mistakes and we work very well together. Other floaters who come in love working at my store. I think I'm just lucky because it's true some people are so difficult and no matter how often you talk to them they don't change.

Where are you guys located that have the rude co workers/superiors in pharmacy? Everyone in Iowa seems really nice--at my work, on rotations-- one preceptor even rec'd me for a job at the hospital, at my research...there was like one preceptor who never smiled I guess. Maybe it's just the midwestern hospitality? Or was that southern...hospitality. I guess i just always assumed all the narcissist types were attracted to surgery (or wall street). Jkjkjkjkjkjk. kind of.

it's also possible i'm just oblivious to the backstabbing or harmful gossiping. It's just for some reason I always thought all the nice people ended up in pharmacy and all the cutthroats were in medicine.

You will deal with it alot out of school, so grow a thick skin. In the hospital, you deal with nurses, doctors, and even pharmacists who will piss you off. Retail is no different, except they usually put their mouth where their money is (more money they make or spend, more crap you have to put up with).

As a pharmacist, none of your staff will treat you rudely, unless you allow them. IF your boss does it to you, you need to learn to deal with it or leave b/c your boss isn't leaving. Pharmacists don't usually backstab each other, it would be character/maybe career suicide.

Techs doing it to another tech is pretty common though. You are going to have to step up and put a stop to it whether you are a manager or not. When they annoy the crap out of each other, nothing gets done in the pharmacy. I pull them to the side and talk. Luckily I haven't written anyone up.

As for patients treating us like crap, get use to it. In retail, I smile and then I'm super nice to them as I try to find out why they were an AHOLE to me in the first place (usually they have a good reason: a tech who was perceived as rude to them, they waiting to long, we dropped the ball, etec). As for how I keep my cool, i keep telling myself they better buy something, if they don't, as I walk away...I'm cursing in my mind 🙂 When I was in the hospital setting, I sucked it up.....I was an intern and I was on the bottom of the food chain.

In my personal life, I find that I don't tolerate rude people as well, mainly cuz I deal with them every day of my life at work. Rude people can add alot of extra stress, more so than people realize.

Since the environment is full of drama, try to become a good actor, and don't take another actor's actions to be anything more serious than a "show."

Keep yourself entertained.

I can see this all turning into some elaborate altered reality. Like an inside joke, but you're the only one who gets it. Almost picturing the end of a Seinfeld episode where all the minor plots come together in a giant catastrophe. You're screaming "Cut! Cut!" but the "show" just keeps going on....
