Looking for some advice on a bit of a dilemma
this I a bit lengthy so I apologize in advance.
Im currently an IM resident in Eastern Canada reputable program and I plan to go into oncology for my fellowship. I should preface this by saying Ive got dual citizenship long story in a nutshell, my family is in the US and my girlfriends up here.
I was planning on also doing my onc fellowship up here initially, but due to somewhat urgent personal/family reasons I have had to consider transferring programs and finishing up my residency back home in the US. The problem arises with the fact that I did not apply for US heme/onc fellowships for my graduating year basically because this was not my initial intent. In Canada one applies for fellowships a year later than you would in the US. So, if I in fact transferred and finished IM down in the US I would have to take a year off and moonlight/work research, whatever. My ultimate goal is to practice privately in med onc or heme/onc and to do this in the US rather than Canada.
My dilemma is I know if I finish up my program up here in Canada Id stand a great chance at matching at a great onc program for fellowship where I am and then I could always think about going to the US to practice, but should I risk all of this to go back to the US and complete IM there, take my year off and presume Id still stand a chance at matching to a decent heme/onc program? Will it actually look any better to apply to a US heme/onc program having the name of a US IM program on my CV vs. that of a Canadian? I realize theyre both LCME, but Im just wondering say as an example I transferred to XYX internal medicine program in NY and wanted to match to the same fellowship in heme/onc at XYZ if that would in fact increase my chances?
Any advice? 😕
