I'm a non US immigrant with aspiration to be a resident in the US. I've completed step 1 and 2 of USMLE and currently preparing for step 3. I was in the US from August to December for my rotations. My score is not so good but I did pass both the steps in the first go.

Today I encountered something that made me question my whole journey of USMLE and now I'm so hopeless that I might have breakdown real soon. So after my graduation in my home country, I started working and did not go for residency. So it turns out that my YOG are more than what is expected which are 4. In this cycle as well I didn't get the response I expected which will make it 5 if I apply in the next cycle.

Now I'm really confused about what I should do. Is it too late for me to hope that I'll get a residency? If anyone here can help me clear the clouds it would be a great help!!!

Hey there. YOG beyond five can make matching harder, but it is not impossible. Also, if your score is not the way you wanted, this can also affect your chances. Passing on the first attempt is significant, even if your scores aren’t ideal. Focus on Step 3 preparation—a strong Step 3 score can show programs that you’ve improved and are prepared for residency. Be strategic about your specialty choice, and apply broadly to IMG-friendly programs.
