Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if I have any chance at all getting into a DO school. I have a 3.5 GPA, I scored 21N on the MCAT (9 on bio, 8 on physical, and 4 on verbal), and I work at Yale University as a Clinical Technician making microscope slides for Pathologists. I've shadowed a DO and a Pathologist, and I have recommendations from both. I've also volunteered at an Autopsy room at Yale. My personal statement is pretty good since it details all my struggles in life and how osteopathic medicine would be ideal for me. Thanks.

I think you gotta apply to really find out, but that 4 is a killer.

I believe what's worse than the 21 is the fact that it is so unbalanced between the sections. I would still apply unless money is a major issue. You need to apply to many places as well.

I bet you had a mis-grid on the verbal. If you take the MCAT again you'll probably have at least 8's and 9's for all 3 sections.

I'm originally from Iran. I came to the US in 1995. My writing score is average, so I'm hoping that DO schools will look past my verbal score since my science scores are ok.

From a personal experience, you will be fine with these scores so long as you apply early and to many schools. i applied to 17 DO schools or so, and got into 5 of them. By the way my scores are not to far from yours, English is my second language as well.

Just apply early like now!!!.. get everything in and hopefully they will grant you an interview.. Once you get to your interview.. its all up to how much you can impress them...

I don't think they'll look at the writing score as a substitute. I'd be surprised if a DO school overlooked MCAT to this degree. The simple fact is they don't have to. They can fill their classes up with people from mid 20s up with good ECs. What would make them look at your app and take you in place of one of those guys? I'd concentrate on raising that MCAT.

I could be wrong, I mean I'm not a member of any adcom, or I'd be more confident about my own chances

Hey, I am in the process of applying and I actually have a similar score. To be honest, i dont really know what happened on test day because verbal for me was always my highest score on practice tests. Unfortunately, I didnt find out my score until AFTER i submitted my aacomas app, so ive been getting letters from schools asking for my scores and im reluctant to send them. However, ive spoken to some admission directors to let them know that i am retaking the test in august. they tell me to send my scores anyway and they'll put my app on "hold" until they get a higher MCAT score. So that is my plan. I think you should re-take the MCAT in august and practice VR tests like there's no tomorrow. DONT GIVE UP! When i got my mcat scores, it was really difficult for me cause i felt like i studied a lot too. but i also know test day went horrible for me overall. so im hoping my prior experience will help me to focus more on the august mcat, cause i know i can score higher than a what i did. you can too!
