So my POI wants to take myself and my fellow applicants out to dinner before our interviews the next day. What should I wear???? She didn't say anything about what kind of restaurant it would be, so I don't want to be overdressed, but I still want to look professional. Any suggestions?

Business casual: nice slacks (or a skirt if you like) and a nice blouse/shirt/sweater. No jeans. No stripper heels.

I think business casual is the usual code for pre and post interview events, although first-impressions merit extra care. It might be worth getting a straight answer from someone in the program; if the POI is unreachable or uncomfortable to ask, maybe you could contact one of her grad students?

Business casual.

I'm laughing thinking about how disastrous much an invitation would have been to me; I eat like a horse.

And don't order spaghetti or anything that requires eating with your fingers 😉

hmmm idk if its just me, but I am thinking about how awkward that check is going to be... do you split it 4 ways? do you expect the POI to pay? do you at least offer to pay your portion i.e., how much do I owe you for the bill, etc? eek

When I was interviewing, if the POI wanted to take the applicants out, the POI paid. No splitting the check.

Good point.

Chenelsea3,

Keep your wits about you. Your POI is obviously staging a prisoner's dilemma. If one of you grab the check, you will all pay. If you all cooperate and refrain from grabbing the check, you all will benefit and the POI will pay.

Shrewd POI. 😎

lol that is great. You forgot the option where they ALL defect, reach for the check at the same time, rip it apart, and it lands in the POI's dessert (prisoner's dilemma rules = followed because years later they get a nice laugh out of it).
