I am currently a pre-med student set to Graduate in Dec. with a 3.8+ GPA Not sure what it is but my science only GPA is even higher. Being the first family member I'm aware of to graduate college aligning everything for med school has been a challenge.
Currently I have completed Genetics, Cell, Organics 1 and 2, Physics 1 and 2, Developmental Biology, Two microbial classes, advanced mathematical classes.
I am considering taking Bio-Chem.
I really do not have any personal contacts with any doctors in my area and honestly with my course loads have not had time to shadow anyways. I'm currently employed as a P.T. tech in a local hospital on the weekends, I figured it would at least be good for patient interaction hours plus I get to learn how the technological and billing side of the hospital work.
I'm planning on taking my MCAT in June and I'm feeling pretty decent about it. Of course I will truly find out how well I do after it's done but I generally do pretty decent on stuff like that. I'm very logical and can think though situations well.
I'm posting here for a few reasons.
1) With what I'm doing now (especially my school work and my hours working as a P.T. tech) is there anything I could improve on or add to it that could make me look even better as an applicant.
2) What is the best way to talk to doctors about shadowing? I see them all the time at work but what is considered a polite and proper way to approach them?
3) Just out of curiosity, how hard does the writing section of the MCAT effect an applicant? I can usually construct fantastic papers, but I like to proceed often times at slower rates so I can be more logical and convey what I want to say properly the first time. I know this will not be allowed on the test.
4) If I apply for Med-School this summer I will have no shadowing hours, but patient hours from my P.T. job. If I begin following doctors intensely this Summer, Fall, and preceding Spring Semesters will that be considered? I just hate to send in an applications without any hours because I was getting them during the application process. This also ties into the fact that since I don't really know any doctors, It may be a few months before I can get a letter of recommendation from them.
Thank you anyone for a response. Please excuse the grammatical errors as it is really late right now lol. I'm in Columbus, Ga. if any local doctor reads this and would let me shadow with them!
