Hey,

I read online that some schools have a seperate committee for disadvantaged applicants, is that so? And which schools do you know of that do? And does anyone know what they are looking for in a disadvantaged applicant?

I think all the UCs have them. At least I know UCLA does.

Unfortunately, pop culture portrays the majority of minorities only caring about the "bling bling" and the rims, etc that you mentioned. If that is the image that is portrayed in mainstream America, is it any wonder that most black kids want to be rappers and ball players when they grow up? Mintrelsy is still alive today.

And another thing, my parents are not from this country. We literally had nothing, but does that mean that I should not attend medical school because I coudn't afford to take an MCAT prep class or because I couldn't take special summer sessions at Yale or Harvard??

Disadvantaged status exists to equalize all applicants regardless of race or economic background. How could an ad com NOT take those things into consideration.

I'm not asking for a hand out, or for special treatment. . .just don't put me down because I'm black.

I find Gleevec to be rather self-righteous and hypocritical, he is definitely every bit a true blue duke student. I'm sure like so many others he only wants to be a doc b/c he's a dukie and his mommy and daddy won't love him anymore if he doesn't become a doc or lawyer hence his double major.

This thread is about disadvantaged status, not for people who want to start fights (Kmn5, Gleevec etc). If you bring nothing to the table then you should not post. If you don't think there should be such a thing, then start a thread about it. The original poster OBVIOUSLY wanted to explore what this meant, so look at the posts and see who is being useful and who isn't.
