What are the disadvantages of reapplying? Do all medical schools know you are a reapplicant? Thanks in advance

As far as I can tell there are only a few disadvantages to reapplying:

-The schools that you've been rejected from in the past already have an opinion of you and it's going to take something significant to change that opinion...therefore those "what have you done with the past year of your life" questions become so much more important
-You have to pay for AMCAS and secondaries and interviews AGAIN

The advantages:
-It goes alot more smoothly the second time around because you know what's going on and when to get everything out
-you get another year to make your application better
-you get to have a life while everyone in med school is working themselves into the ground

Not all schools know that you're a re-applicant unless they ask. It's not counted against you accept in the fact that schools that you're re-applying to know who you are and have a pre-conceived notion of who you are (according to my advisor). I've reapplied to about half (10) of my original schools, but in the MD capacity this time instead of MD/PhD so I dont know how they'll look at my application this time and I have 14 new schools that havent seen me yet.

good luck

You really have to improve your credentials during the time that you had between the first time application and re-application.

As a reapplicant myself, I thought about this question a lot. I asked my pre-med advisor and he basically said what the other poster said. You have to show that you improved your credentials during your time off.

Although, not a disadvantage per se, it really sucks to have to pay for AMCAS and the secondaries and the LORs all over again. 😡
