I was just reading some comments from some students who received ABCDF grades at their medical school institutions. In applying for residencies, they believe this gave them an "edge" over individuals who just had a "P" on their transcripts.
What do you think about this?

All schools rank students in their class. Some do it internally and some externally(publicly). Even if your school is P/F, you will be ranked in your class and residency programs will use this info.

Given that P/F or H/P/F are the most prevalent systems, especially at higher tier schools I doubt it will have a significant difference. P/F is really only applicable for the first two years, and you are already vaulted on that material via the Step 1 exam which is much more important to your residency placement.
