* **Year in school**: Incoming senior
* **Country/state of residence**: Kentucky

* **Demographics**: White, female, first generation college student

* **Schools to which you are applying**: Work in progress. Any feedback is much appreciated.

University of Kentucky
University of Louisville
Creigton
Rush
Rosalind Franklin
George Washington
Tulane
Wake Forest
Albany
(I would like to apply to 20 schools)

* **Cumulative GPA**: 3.85

* **Science GPA**: 3.80

* **MCAT Scores**: 509 (126/128/127/128) Very disappointed. Horrible distribution. Not even sure if I should apply MD with this?

* **Research – include any abstracts/posters/publications and how you were credited (eg. First author, senior author, etc)**:

3 summers of paid, full-time research in a biochemistry lab (at my PUI)

Several posters at local and regional conferences as first author

No pubs yet but I will be 2nd author on one that we are currently working on

Research for credit in same lab during the fall/spring semesters

* **Volunteering (clinical) – include hours/sites**:

\~130 hours as a bedside volunteer at a children's hospital

* **Physician shadowing – include hours/specialties**:

Emergency department \~20 hours

Allergy specialist \~24 hours

Orthopedic specialist \~12 hours

* **Non-clinical volunteering**:

\~150 hours at a homeless shelter

* **Extracurricular activities**: N/A
* **Employment history**:

Currently work as a CNA in the med-surge unit of a hospital 20 hours a week (since Sep 2018)

Previously worked as a CNA in a nursing home 20 hours a week (\~Aug 2017-Oct 2018)

Worked various jobs in addition to these such as seasonal Target cashier and server at a catering company on weekends.

* **Immediate family members in medicine? (y/n)**: No

I will have a LOR from my PI that I have worked with for 2 years now and another science professor who I have TAed for and have a great relationship with. I also have a committee letter from my school.

Feeling as though my application is weak and I am not feeling too good about applying this cycle. I come from a low income family and have to pay to support myself 100% so I spent the majority of my time working. I spent as much time as I could volunteering and shadowing when not working and doing homework but now I see it is not very much at all. Are there any schools that have shown to be understanding of this sort of thing and/or value experiences such as CNA work?

My ECs are weak and my MCAT is disappointing to say the least. I’m not even sure if I should apply this cycle. Honest opinions appreciated.

Your MCAT is fine to apply this cycle to certain schools. I suggest these schools:
U Kentucky
U Louisville
Wayne State
Oakland Beaumont
Medical College Wisconsin
Loyola
Rosalind Franklin
Rush
St.Louis
Creighton
Wake Forest
NOVA MD
George Washington
Georgetown
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
West Virginia
New York Medical College
Vermont
Albany
Quinnipiac
You should receive several interviews if you apply this month and submit all your secondaries by late July.

You think a score that is only two points below the national median for acceptees is a bad score?

And they said “horrible distribution” even though each section was practically the same. I am very confused.

I'm sorry I am not trying to offend anyone. My score is lower than I was expecting based on my FLs. I feel that I am lacking in other areas as compared to other candidates so I was hoping for a higher score to make up for this. I don't at all think it is a bad score, I'm just disappointed in myself and it certainly does limit the school list I can apply to. In terms of distribution, I was under the impression that higher sub-scores in C/P and B/B are valued more and those were my two lower scores. I'm sorry again, simply just looking for advice so that I can refine my school list and highlight what assets I do have.

I recommend:
U VM
U Toledo
Rush
NYMC (maybe)
Creighton
Albany
Rosy Franklin
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
MCW
SLU
WVU
Wayne State
Tulane
Loyola
Wake Forest
Loma Linda (only if you are SDA or a very devout Christian)
VCU
Netter
Seton Hall
EVMS
Oakland-B
Gtown
GWU
Uniformed Services University/Hebert (just be aware of the military service commitment)
Nova MD
TCU/UNT
Your state school(s).
Any DO program. I can't recommend Touro-NY, Nova, Wm Carey, LUCOM, for different reasons. MSUCOM? Read up on Larry Nasser and you decide. LMU has an accreditation warning, which concerns me.
