Disclosing DUI to the board of pharmacy

I will be starting my first year this August, but unfortunately I made the selfish decision to get behind the wheel while intoxicated back in April. I have no excuses for my actions, I made a poor decision and I have been trying to cope and make up for my poor actions.


I am still going through the motions of the legal system, my first court hearing was pushed back to December. So no charges have been filed against me as of yet.


My initial background check for school went well, nothing was found on my record relating to this incident. But I do know my arrest record will show up when the Board of Pharmacy runs their background check when I apply for my intern license; the application does require me to disclose this information to the board. The board’s website does not fully outline what is needed when I do disclose this information, the website is as clear as mud. The application simply says I need to provide an explanation of the incident, but how do I go about doing this? What do I have to include when typing this up?


Before everyone starts telling me that I should I ask a lawyer before coming to SDN for advice, my lawyer and I have come to the consensus that I do have to disclose this information according to the legalese of the application. All I’m asking for is how do I go about creating the disclosure document.

As far as pharmacy is concerned, don’t worry about it, let the BOP know immediately, call them, then write a letter to them, then inform them when everything is over and you completed everything required of you. You will be fine.

But in this job market? Even if the BOP clears him, it will still show up on his background check and employers definitely won't like that when they have their pick of any new graduate.

I hate to be that guy, but maybe it's time to consider something else other than pharmacy.

This was a few years ago but I know of a pharmacy manager in my area who got busted for DUI in pharmacy school and still managed to do alright.

By the time OP graduates that will be what, 7-10 years in the past? The market is way more competitive than then already and it's not exactly heading in a favorable direction.

The most important thing is to disclose it. If you omit it you will be considered to have lied which can result in license revocation once it's discovered. Your attorney is useless, I am not one but I would keep it simple, factual, direct and be willing to submit additional info. Ie I was arrested on 1/1/20 for suscipion of dui. ....you may also ask the bop what's needed

This. There are plenty of desperate new grads with $200k+ in loans and clean records. Why would any employer take the chance on OP?

Time to choose a different profession.

Many first time offenses can get expunged.Ask a lawyer.I did.I never put mine down when they ask for it. I never put arrests down either if I was not guilty or charges dismissed. Good luck and take an Uber next time.

I know plenty of people who did something stupid when they were young who went on to become successful pharmacists. Don't listen to the people saying it's time to hang up your hat because of this. Learn from your mistake, be better in the future, and talk to a lawyer.

The difference is making a one time mistake that you learn from, or being that perpetual screw up who refuses to change. Don't be that person.
