is it possible to disloacte a jaw from yawning? if that happens to someone, what's the procedure to get it back into the place?(assuming getting help is not possible) thanx!

In dental school, we had a "working girl" show up with an open-lock she openly blamed on her "business practices".

The procedure is to (facing the patient) put your thumbs in the mouth and rest them on the outer buccal shelf of the mandible while your other fingers are underneath the mandible for support. Just push down and you should feel the muscles pull the condyles back into position. Make sure your fingers aren't in a position to get bitten, because you will get bit pretty hard. I have never actually done this, so this is just from my prior reading on the subject.

I stand behind the patient, tell them to open their mouth as wide as possible, and torque their jaw. I push the angle posterior and inferior while lifting their chin. Works everytime, never had to sedate.

Don't ask your dentist...he doesn't want to hear about it.

Hi Omar,

I'll try to explain this as best I can. The clicking or popping you hear is probably due to disc displacement; you have discs placed bilaterally and between your condyle and skull (it acts as a cushion). When a disc is displaced, it pops in and out of place upon opening and closing. Disc displacement is fairly common and should not be too concerning unless you are experiencing pain. It may help to try to limit your opening as often as possible to avoid out-stretching the ligaments.

Hope this helps!
