I was in a restaurant last night that I frequent and one of the waiters that I know is going to med school next year. He told me one of his professors is graduating from OT school (the program I am applying to) and that you have to dissect human cadavers during OT school just like you do for med school. Is this accurate? If so, how many semesters does this take place? Thanks. JLR

The course is called gross anatomy, and yes, each occupational therapy that I know of, at least in Texas has this course as part of their curriculum. It usually takes place within the first semester of school and is one of the more intense classes we will have to take. If you did well in A&P I&II and enjoyed dissecting the cat, this should be breeze, but then again I am the type of person that likes looking at injuries and stuff. Hope this helps.

Yes it is very accurate. Not all schools have the resources to get cadavers. At downstate we have Gross anatomy on cadavers specimens and we have to dissect them ourselves and the course lasted from June till August and was very intense. Some schools have the cadavers dissected by other students and then the OT students just have to know the structures. I think its a different experience when you do it yourself. Its a pretty good experience to learn anatomy with an actual human body. and there are countless benefits to it. SO yes there are quite a few schools that gross anatomy with cadaver specimens but not all. So if you would like to do that make sure you ask the program before hand.

I've heard that at the school I'm attending the PT and OT students actually get the cadavers before the med students - we look through all the tissues/muscles, then the med students go through the internal structures.
