I go to a small university... I had my schedule all planned out before registration. When I went to register the day it opened... two of the courses I wanted to take in second semester were full!

I have a couple of options:

Rearrange my second semester schedule so that I'm taking biology courses that I have absolutely no interrest in (chordate and plant ecology... ew no) and not be able to take the ones that I wanted to take (evolution and behavioral ecology 🙁 )

Take the three courses that weren't full yet and take one or two courses (haven't decided if I'm going to take 4 or 5 courses that semester) with courses that are totally unreleated to what I want to do and that I have no interrest in... it will probably be a random english, philosophy, math, french, and/or art course because none of the chemistry, other bio, psychology, and programming courses fit.

Or take three courses and then find one or two distance/online courses in biology. My university already offers Drugs and Behavior online not sure what else... haven't really looked... I applied to another university so that I could take a field course this summer, so I can always see what they have to offer.

Basically I'm asking what vet schools prefer. I'd rather not waste my money on courses that I'm going to not enjoy, so I'd rather go with the third route.

Before you make that decision, I think you should first talk to the professors of the classes you want to take. Just say that you are really hoping to take their classes and ask if there is any way they can squeeze you in. They might say no - some lecture halls have a limit on people because of fire codes or they might prefer to teach small classes, but it's worth a shot.

If that doesn't work, I would recommend going to the first couple days of those classes that you want. At the end of the first class just talk to the prof again and explain that if anyone drops the class you'd like to add it. Lots of people will over-schedule on purpose so they can check the classes out and then drop one or two that they don't like. Other people might go to the first class, realize it's not what they thought it would be like, and drop it. I've done both. Your prof might set up a waiting list, or your advisor might be able to get you onto a waiting list in the computer (I think you could do that at my school).

My school was huge and the same problem still happened. In most cases the above two methods were sufficient to get into a class. In my physics II class there were probably 20-30 people in your situation, so they just came to class and talked to the professor and he ended up adding extra seats and extra sections to the class (it was already 250 people so it didn't affect his teaching style at that point).

If you're nervous about seats opening up, why not register for some online classes that give you the option to drop in the first two weeks? That would give you a backup plan.

in addition to what has already been mentioned, some people will be dropped from classes b/c they didn't pay their tuition by the deadline or had holds on their account. i would definitely recommend emailing/calling/going to talk to the professors of those classes now and then attend class on the first day and talk to them again. it will all work out 🙂

Thank you 🙂

Natural History, one of the two courses that were full when I went to register, is the course that is going to screw up my entire second semester if I don't get to take it. I already emailed the prof. He put me first on the waiting list, and told me he was going to look into why it filled up so fast. He remembers me from another course I took with him and I'm taking another course with him first semester... the cap on Natural History was 14 students... I'm kinda hoping he'll make an exception for me 😛

I also couldn't get into Parisitology. Ornithology is pretty much in the same time slot, so it was no big deal.

Most of the 300 and 400 level biology classes only have one lab section... and it seems like all of the other courses I want to take conflict with the labs more than the actual classes.

Grr. It's frusterating. I was really looking forward to this year, because unlike my first and second year, I don't have all of these required courses to worry about taking. Also, I was hoping to get all of my vet school pre-requisits taken care of... that's not going to happen. Biochem conflicts with everything, hehe.

I solved my problems 🙂

I was looking through the courses and found a 6 credit evening psych course that will give me 5 courses first semester and 4 second if I don't get into Natural History. And by taking it, I'll have completed my minor 🙂

I am so relieved right now.
