I am tring to locate a distance education course that deals with cultural sociology or anthropology..... this is to complete my last pre-req for Western. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Check out the anthropology and sociology courses offered at UNC Chapel Hill.

These are the on-line courses being offered this summer:
http://www.fridaycenter.unc.edu/cp/cco/courses.html
(ANTH 101: General Anthropology; ANTH 142: Local Cultures, Global Forces; ANTH 440: Gender and Culture) and tons of sociology courses that I am not going to list because I am too tired.

These are the self-paced correspondence courses that can be started at any time and can usually be completed in 8 weeks if you work your butt off:
http://www.fridaycenter.unc.edu/cp/catalog/anthropology.html
(ANT 252: Cultural Anthropology)

These courses will definitely fulfill your pre-req, but they will not be an easy 'A' because the quality of UNC's distance education courses is very high.

Wow...so I just wrote this ridiculously long response to your question, and for some reason or other my session timed out on me and it was ALL lost upon hitting the submit button. Oh well, let me try and remember what I wrote then (and this time before I submit it, I'm copying and pasting my response to WORD!)
Since you're coming to Western (congrats!) I wanted to tell you about the possibility of taking the anthro or sociology class online through Cal Poly Pomona's Extended University. I know, from experience, that CPP offers anthro classes every quarter online (ANT 102- Cultural anthro, and ANT 305 are frequently among the ones offered, both of which I've taken). Now, I am no expert on what the extended university is all about, but after reading through their web page, it appears that you don't have to be a formal student to apply and take courses. Here's the link to the page:
http://www.ceu.csupomona.edu/courses/courses&programs.html
click on the button that says open university, and that will take you to a page from which you can view available classes (anthro being among them) I have no idea how much such a program would cost, however I would assume that for one class, it shouldn't be more than a couple of hundred 😕
I'm 99.99% sure that any CPP anthro class will transfer to Western.
Another possibility to look into would be to take an online Junior college class in anthro or socio. I'm not sure on the specifics, however from the one JC I just looked at, no where did it say on the enrollment requirements to the college that you had to be a California resident (in reference to a California JC I looked up😉) I would assume then that you, even if you are an OOSer, could take an online class through a California college as long as you fill out the online app and pay for the class (which here is fairly cheap per unit...$15 I think)
For Californian transfer credits, we have www.assist.org which shows us which classes transfer from JC's to 4 yr establishments. If you are able to enroll in any California JC in an online anthro class, then you can use the website to see if the units transfer to a Cal State (if it transfers to a Cal State..it'll transfer most anywhere, including Western!) Your best bet would be to call Western just to make sure it will transfer.
Some of those other distance education courses can get fairly pricey, so I'd say if you can go the online JC route, IS or OOS, then go for it!
But, look into Extended University programs, like CPP's as well!
Hope that helps, and sorry for being long-winded!

I just found the specifics on the California JC enrollment requirement. There is an OOS student admission's fee. It's $180 per unit as opposed to the IS $20 (scratch the previous $15 I mentioned...the tutition keeps going up and up and up here, so much so I can't keep track anymore...) That being said, if you're like me and not made of money, I'd say nevermind going down that route unless it is still cheeper than CPP's extended university.

Thanks a lot to you both, I will check out all of the possiblilities listed. I have been in touch with my admissions counsleor for Western and they will except an online course from just about any accredited college.

Thanks Again!

Sorry for the hijack but, exactly how important is it to take Calculus in college for pre-vet? Because it seems many Vet Schools don't require it.

I haven't, and I probably won't. I did take an upper-division stats course.

Oh, and I also took trig-base physics instead of calc-based... trust me, it's hard either way. It's still physics. 🙂

I took Calculus and made an A. I did well, I liked the class, and there are times I really wish that I had taken stats instead. Now I'm taking 20 hours my senior year because I had to add stats in because half of the vet school actually do require STATS. Any of the vet schools I looked at would accept stats as a replacement for calculus if they required calculus. If the school requires stats though, they rarely accept calculus as a substitute.

Mwhaha excellent news that I won't have to take Calculus :3
Stats seems a lot easier anyways.

Ty for the help guys!
