I know that all diverging lens (concave), can only make virtual upright images... But can they make both diminished/enlarged images or just diminished?

I'm thinking they can make both.

m = -i/o

If i > o then it's enlarged
If i < o then it's diminished

i just tried doing the ray diagram and i think its just diminished.

ah no, convex lens can make both virtual and real images. As you can see when the object is within the focal length, it makes virtual upright images thats larger then object. I wouldn't mess with the lens maker's equation too much on the MCAT, if you have an idea of what these things should look like you can solve lens/mirror problems very quickly

Hmm actually you may be right then, just diminished

BTW Convex lens = Converging lens not Diverging lens

oh then yes just look at those diagrams, and if u can lock those pictures into your short term memory then you are good for those type of questions imo. Ray tracing is a huge waste of time for lens problems on the MCAT.

Looking at the picture, let me know if this makes sense:

As an object moves towards the lens, the image becomes smaller and smaller...
When moving away from the lens, the image becomes bigger (but still smaller than the object)


Or is it the opposite?

Try using the equation and see what happens as you take the limit.

I was wondering if you had two lenses, the first one is CONVERGING, and second is DIVERGING. What kind of images can this set up make up?

both virtual and real, or just virtual, because the 1st image has to go through the 2nd lens, which is diverging, and diverging can only make Virtual right?

That would depend on the spacing of the two lenses as well as the object. I think you could have any combination (except if second lens is diverging - you would have a virtual, upright image... and still not sure if the image would be diminishing as the object gets closer to the image or vice versa)

Nope, you can never have a "perfect image" - its either upright and virtual or real and inverted.
