Hi SDN!

I’ve been struggling with coming up with a topic for my diversity essay. I am a white female from a relatively wealthy area of CT, and am hoping to get some advice on whether either of these topics sound interesting/acceptable!

1) I was a theater major in college and actually was planning on applying to a conservatory for musical theater until I decided to also pursue neuroscience. I did a few really exciting productions as a result, i worked with a local veterans group to put on a play about virtual reality therapy, I did some site specific stuff, wrote a play, etc. My biggest worry about this is that I already talked about my theater history in my PS and connected it to my current job as a clinical research coordinator.

2) I actually have a four year old brother that I live with - he was born one month into my first semester of college and I have been heavily involved with his care. I was apprehensive before he was born but after I gained a lot of perspective and patience. I always thought this was an interesting fact about me, as not many have siblings 18 years younger than them (unless I am wrong!)

Does anyone think either of these ideas are feasible and/or engaging? I also wanted to see if it was too personal to write about an immediate family member’s opiate addiction for my challenge essay. I was 12 and was exposed to a lot of information about it at that age; it was definitely a pivotal experience. Please let me know what y’all think and thank you so much!

First one sounds interesting, just focus on a different aspect than your personal statement. This may change Depending on how the school phrases the question but for most try to show why this makes you unique and bringing something valuable to the class. I don't think you should use the second one.

1) first world problems
2) you're supposed to take care of loved ones

Introspection is a required trait for doctors.

Pretty sure they meant this for diversity not for adversity
