I was wondering if this essay would be appropriate for answering this question specifically but also other essay prompts that ask how I am diverse or how I can bring a unique perspective to a medical school?

Each of us relates to others through characteristics that make up our individual diversity. Tell us how your diversity is reflected not only in your personal and professional activities, but also in your relationship with others, particularly in diverse learning environments. (Max 500 words)

At My College, I pursued a dual major in Human Biology and Global Health—not as separate interests, but as two sides of the same coin. Together, they shaped how I understand medicine and its broader purpose. Where Human Biology taught me to think in molecules, cells, and organ systems, Global Health expanded my lens to consider the social, political, and economic forces that shape access to care. It pushed me to ask harder questions—not just how diseases work, but why they persist in some communities more than others; why some treatments reach patients while others never do; and how systemic inequality influences who gets to be healthy in the first place. Through this interdisciplinary training, I came to see health as more than a clinical outcome—it’s a reflection of structures and histories that often marginalize the most vulnerable.
This perspective didn’t stay confined to the classroom. It shaped the kinds of communities I was drawn to work with—particularly children with special needs, one of the most consistently underserved groups in our healthcare system. As a head coach with Miracle League, I learned how to build trust through patience and adaptation. I advocated for my players by helping organize awareness events and encouraging volunteers to better understand the unique challenges our players faced. These moments—whether guiding a nonverbal child to first base or calming a parent’s nerves before a game—showed me how care begins with listening and continues through advocacy.
These experiences have shaped the kind of physician I hope to become—one who sees each patient in the full context of their lives, not just their symptoms. My foundation in Human Biology ensures I approach medicine with scientific precision, while my Global Health training compels me to ask deeper questions about access, equity, and systemic barriers. Whether I’m treating a child with developmental delays or advocating for policies that expand care, I want my role as a physician to extend beyond the exam room. I aim to serve as both a clinician and community partner—someone who builds trust, reduces disparities, and works upstream to prevent disease before it begins. Medicine, for me, is not just a discipline of healing but a platform for structural change. (373 words)
