Hey SDN,

I am having difficultly coming up with a diversity essay (shocker), but I was wondering if this would be an acceptable topic to talk about:

I have played fastpitch softball at a high level my entire life (including college) --> I have a passion for sports and exercise --> kinesiology major, learned a lot about the importance of physical activity and nutrition, especially in regards to treating chronic diseases, ei. obesity, diabetes, etc --> I now have strong desire to educate anyone who will listen (including my future patients) about how exercise and diet can treat diseases.

So in summary, I would contribute to the diversity of the class because of my interest in physical activity/sports, combined with my kinesiology background, and my desire to educate people about misconceptions in regards to the effects diet and exercise. I am I completely off base with this topic? I did touch on it briefly in my PS. Just thinking about the other pre-meds I know at my school, I think this makes me the most different.

I appreciate any suggestions!

Suggesting that you offer dietary advice without some sort of certification in the field might not be received well.

Okay, so that's not good topic.

How about this: the fact that both my parents do not have college degrees and no one in my family or extended family works in the medical field, so I think I have a unique perspective/upbringing as a relative outsider in regards to academia and medicine.

Bump, does this sound like a better topic for diversity? ^^

So, you like to eat healthy. What would others think is "cool" about that? Does that mean you cook or prepare food for others at times? Do you prepare ethnic dishes? What is your favorite cuisine? What is your very best dish? Did any family member teach you about food preparation? Mull this over and see if it inspires any ideas for an essay.

I'm confused, why don't you just write an essay about competing in softball all your life? It obviously shows discipline, teamwork, and excellent time management skills and it's something very unique. Don't try to tie in your passion for softball with anything else, just sell yourself as a college athlete

You and five gazillion other pre-meds.

Introspection is a required trait for a doctor
