So I am having trouble with coming up with a concise diversity essay. I come from an upper middle class white suburb.

I have two thoughts but sure if they are any good,

First played an instrument through middle school and high school. I did a lot with it but did not kept up with it in college. Did marching band, played solos every year and played in the county band. I don’t really know how to connect this back to medical school but this seems to be somewhat popular topic music.

Second would be my research experience. I was in a small lab group with a lot of contact with the PI. This led to be given a lot of responsibility and ended up doing a lot of collaboration. I work with a lot of groups and have worked with a lot of different cultures. I worked with people from Egypt, Ukraine, Brazil and Australia. This topic seems ok to me but my personal statement also talks about being a team player and my experiences with it.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm also struggling with the diversity essay. I've written several, sending different ones to different schools, in case one of my ideas is particularly cringe-worthy.

I think your research might be a safe bet. You probably want to focus on something you're doing now or have done recently, rather than going off about what you did in high school (unless you've continued it in college).

Well I am kinda suprised but talking about my parents could actually maybe work. Thinking about it. That never crossed my mind before.

These are my topics so far:

1. I'm not a URM, but I come from a lot of different ethnicities (in a sort of mix that isn't common at all, at least in my generation). I wrote about that a bit. Maybe too literal though.

2. I've been chronically ill, which is now controlled with medication. Not a great subject because it might make people think I can't handle med school.

3. I also did research in a somewhat unusual setting. Maybe a safer bet than the other two, but I've tried to avoid sending the same response to all my schools, since none of them are particularly strong anyway.

I agree that research is the safe bet. I also feel like I use research too much with 8 of my activities where research related and my personal statement talking about research.

what other hobbies do you have?
