I'm currently taking general chemistry at a local university. I'll have the course completed by the end of summer, and in the fall and spring I plan to take organic chemistry, physics, and biology. In theory, I could then take the MCAT in August of '06 and apply that fall.

Would this be wise though, since I would've only taken the bare minimum requirements for med school? The other option would be to continue taking classes for another year, possibly even obtaining a master's in biochem or biology during that time. Then I'd be applying in the fall of '07 and entering in the fall of '08. I suppose I could also load up on more courses this fall and spring, though I think the disadvantages of taking too many courses probably outweigh the advantages.

Any ideas? BTW, my undergrad GPA (obtained in 2004, non-science) was a 3.3, so much of the value of taking extra science courses, in addition to being better prepped for the the MCAT, would be to raise my overall GPA to a more respectable number.

I think you mean the MCAT🙂

Yes, I think your current plan is possible, but Orgo, bio, and physics with three labs all at the same time is no walk in the park. Still, it can be done. That's what I did this past year.

But you're right, another year would allow you to boost your undergrad gpa that isn't bad but on the low end for admissions. I guess it all depends on how soon you want to be in med school. The safest route would be to take a couple years and boost that gpa. Getting it up to a 3.5 would make a world of a difference. Good luck!
