hey guys! I was reading a Kaplan q and it said after 5 years what will you see in a patient recently diagnosed with DM2?

Ans: Diabetic Retinopathy
Other options : motor neuropathy and Diabetic Nephropathy

Does anyone know what the order of progession is for these complications for board purposes? I thought it was motor neuropathy before Retinopathy?!

someone plz help
thank you

That's because Retinopathy and Neuropathy are caused by osmotic damage to pericytes & schwann cells while Nephropathy is caused by microangiopathy which takes some time.
Now between Retinopathy and Neuropathy, the neuropathy is sensory/sensorimotor but not purely motor, hence the right answer is Retinopathy.

Hi- thank you for that. However, how does neuropathy not being purely motor make retinopathy faster? Could u explain that plz
