does this combined-degree need to be pursued in concert or can you earn your dmd/dds and, years later, earn your PhD?

I was not sure where to post this question, but this seems like a good place to start...

thx in advance...

The idea of a combined program is you do the two degrees at the same time. You could go back and get a PhD years after dental school without problem, but it wouldn't be part of a combined program, which I don't think really makes any difference.

at our school you do:

1 year as D1.
then go do PhD for 3 years.
then remaining 3 years of dental school.

You finish in 7 years and receive both degrees at the finish.

Also, at our school if you are accepted into the program, school is paid for and you get a stipend. We have 3 students out of our class of 70 that are doing the dentist/scientist program.

dual degree programs are designed to save you time, as well as put more physician-scientists in the academic world. most programs are combined in the format of 1st two years of d-school (didactic/preclinic), then 3 years or however long it takes you for PhD (namely, thesis research), then last 2 years of d-school (clinic). some schools are different, for instance, ucla does 3 years of school, then halftime in clinic to finish 4th year reqs while starting PhD research.
good luck.
