DMS Class of 2011!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got my DMS letter today too!

I guess they're shy.

Did you have a nice thanksgiving?

Yes it was nice, lots of eating. Now I have 4 exams thursday :'(. After this week I'm basically done with school though 😀 How about you?

Any idea yet if your going to attend DMS? As of now it looks like I'm heading to DMS next Fall, if there is no problems with financial aid or any other offers are made.

Mine was good too, thanks. Saw my family, minimal fighting and sweet potato pie! Two exams left and then I'm done with undergrad FOREVER!

The med school decision will depend heavily upon financial aid. My DMS interview day was one of the best interview days I've experienced in this process. I absolutely loved the hospital, the faculty I met, and the students. And every time I get hand-written correspondence from the Dean (isn't it cool how he always writes something on the official stuff?) I renew my excitement. Still, I have a few concerns about location (not especially urban-- I'm from NY) and housing.

I'm probably not going to make a final decision until April.

:luck: for Thursday.

Yay, exams are OVER!

Happy holidays to you. I'll bet Hanover is really pretty this time of year.

Hey, Happy Holidays. At last its over 🙂. Anyone else care to join us here? 😀

I'm still deciding but Dartmouth is definitely one of my top choices. Do you guys know when the re-visit days are? Happy Holidays!

anyone certain about going to Dartmouth now?

certainly 🙂

Hey, so I am deciding between Vanderbilt and DMS and I would love to hear a current student's perspective! Anyone want to share their experience, what it's like being a medical student, what the like and dislike about the program etc?

Thanks a lot! 🙂

I'm totally looking forward to second look this weekend. Anyone else planning to go?

I'll be there this weekend - very excited!

Wow, I can't believed this thread is only 2 pages. What happened to all the DMSer. Anyway I am a 2nd year here. Any of you have any questions I can help out with?

here's a question for you. do the professors hand out slides for the classes, or are they emailed to everyone? or do students just have to write down everything. i'm asking cuz i wanna know if a tablet pc would be useful.

Lecturers post their powerpoints and an additional set of lecture notes online (so in most classes, you really don't need a textbook since everything you need to know is in the provided lecture notes). In addition, many professors post mp3s of their lectures online so that you can listen to their lectures and go through their powerpoints on your own time. I really feel like if you're furiously taking notes in class you're just missing what's being said, especially since everything you need to know is in the lectures notes anyway. So, I guess a table pc would be okay, especially if you want to draw on figures in the powerpoints, but pretty much everything you need to know is given to you.

I would say it is much better to get a regular PC vs. a tablet because you can type into the powerpoint much faster than you can scribble. Not all lectures have good notes. Around 10% of the lectures have horrible notes, so it is important in some cases to take notes and read from a textbook.

The lecture slides will be posted as well as notes that go along with them. So a tablet PC is not necessary. MP3s are also posted, although during my 1st year, this wasn't the case. They just added it this year for the 1st year class.

hey, is it necessary to have a car the first year? also, are there any on-campus housing options? what is the best way to find a place to live? thanks.

Is anyone going to make a Dartmouth Medical School Class of 2011 facebook group?

True story from a first year:

My anatomy lab partner would smear human cadaver grease on my apron and goggles. He did it more than once, even after I told him I didn't like it. Of course, another lab partner would just defend him, saying that my apron was already dirty.

I don't get it, what are you implying?😕

Why don't you do the honors? I'm sure people will join👍

Eh, I'm not 100 % certain I'll be at DMS and therefore don't want to have the great responsibility that comes with being the creator of a group. LOL...anyone else want to start it? I'll definitely join!

physicsnerd or another DMS student, i see that not many students have matched into neurosurgery (actually, i only see 1 that matched between 2001 and 2005 at instititutions which DMS graduates most frequently match). i know nsg is not the most popular/easiest field to get into (gross understatement!), but is there a particular reason why DMS lacks many matches into this field? is this b/c there's a lack of interest in nsg at DMS or other reasons? any opinions about nsg/neuroscience research/opportunities at DMS would be appreciated? thanks.

Four people have matched into neurosurgery in the last four years from Dartmouth out of an average graduating class size of about 50 per year (or at least that's what the nifty spreadsheet Dartmouth gave me with all the matches from the last several years tells me). I think it's more of a lack of interest than any other reasons. I get the impression that Dartmouth students decided to do other things instead of applying nsg and not matching. Actually, there are quite a few people in my class who are interested in neurosurgery, so we'll see what the matchlist looks like in a few years.

The guy who matched neurosurgery this year was MD/PhD and did his PhD in biomedical engineering doing neuro-imaging/neurosurgery-related research. Much of his research was actually done in collaboration with the chair of neurosurgery here. He matched very high up on his matchlist, so I don't think that coming from Dartmouth hurt him all that much when applying (although I'm not going to pretend that coming out of Dartmouth is like coming out of Colombia or Hopkins if you want to do neurosurgery). Two of the six MD/PhD students in my year (inclulding myself) are considering doing PhDs in the same lab, also working on collaborative projects with the chair of neurosurgery.

There's a a lot neuroscience research that you can do at Dartmouth. The amount of neurosurgery research is more limited (since we have a relatively small department and the chair and some residents are the ones who do the most research within the department) but there is some you could do. If you show interest, people are always willing to set you up with something to do.

Eh just doing what med students often do: whine. And help create a realistic picture.

Med school rant #2: my roommate, a DMS student, often doesn't flush. It's really gross to walk into the bathroom and see a pile of feces. A.b.s.o.l.u.t.e.l.y disgusting. My other roommate and I are afraid of actually confronting him. Some of us think it's intentional. Hence the rant on the internet.

Thanks a bunch, physicsnerd! I was wondering if I could get your perspective on housing at DMS. My only restrictions are that I won't have a car and would like to be within walking distance of class. Right now, North Park is the most appealing (and only?) option. Are there any other options that meet my requirements that you can think of? Is it possible to live in an on-campus building? And is the Admissions Office the best place to begin the search? Thanks again.

North Park is your best bet (it's on campus and about a 2 minute walk from class), but if you can find anything in Hanover, it'll probably be close enough so that you can bike/walk to school. Go here and click on "upper valley rental list" to see apartments available for rent. If you ask the admissions office for info, they'll probably just give you that link. Good luck and let me know if you need anything else.

Has anyone received information regarding orientation, start of classes, etc., yet? If not, does anyone have an idea of when classes will begin? Thanks.

HS! You crack up big time.:laugh::laugh:

Anyone signed/signing up for the Advanced Readiness Course? I'm thinking about it. Can someone who's taken it reflect a bit on it? Thanks.

Is this year's entering class going to be around 50 or 80? Or is it always around 80 and it's just that in years past roughly 30 of these students were Brown-Dartmouth?

~60 something regular MDs this year

Next year's class will be 73 people. 5 of those will be MD/PhD, 5 will be from NH, 5 from Maine (Dartmouth always sets aside these 15 seats out of the class). So, 68 regular MD, 5 new MD/PhD. That's down from 82 this year because Dartmouth and Brown no longer have the joint program.

For DMS students out there...just had a few questions:
- About how much do you spend on groceries, gas and other incidentals in a month? (aka what is the cost of living)
- Also how bad/long are the winters up there?
- Would a car like a 97 honda accord or a toyota corolla do well up there?

And thanks for the housing link physicsnerd...helped out a lot.

Groceries: $175/month
Gas: $60
Rent: $600
Med school: priceless, there's something money can't buy for everything else there's stafford loans.

Most students own a 2 wheel drive car. Winter is real nastay from Jan-March.

I took the ARC and it was some what useful and somewhat a waste of time. It lets you get settled and meet people earlier, and things like that.
Its main focus is teaching you to study, and a taste of lecture intensity and nature. It is by no means a science refresher or anything like that.
If you have more specific ?'s i can address those.
Oh and if anyone needs a place to live, and isnt doing the north park thing. I have a room open in my apt. I'll be a 2nd year along with the other student posters 🙂
