Hey everyone. I got accepted to DMU. I am going for DPM. Since we will be taking classes together, I thought it would be nice if I got to know some others going here as well. Feel free to pm me.

Hi, grinley! Nice to meet you.

Do we have an official DMU class of 2012 thread? If so, I didn't find it...

Thanks, ShyRem! I think I wrote that at the same time as you. :)

nice. Congrats to the class of 2012. Let me know if a lowly second year can help you out with anything. 2 years into it and love it so far!

Congrats everyone on getting in. I concur with Jbone. I am a first year and I love it and I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks, jbone and jpatzi! Nice to meet you guys.

Actually, I am really interested in hearing more information about the new 3rd year sites when that information is available to you. Another poster told me that they are changing this year (more in-state locations?). If you hear any more information, please let me know!

Glad to hear you're both enjoying it so far! Seems like a great school!

Wow, this thread is dead!

Anybody else DMU-bound?

Hey all,

As one of the representatives of the DMU – UAAO (Undergrad American Academy of Osteopathy), I thought I would give the future DMU’ers a heads-up on some the things that we have been up to over the last few months.

- Over 40 students and faculty attend the AAO Convocation at The Broadmoore in Colorado Springs over spring break.
- Guest Speaker’s Name: Philip Greenman DO, Bruce Cunningham DO, William Anderson DO, Patient Panel.
- Noon Review Session = UAAO Officers provide time for 1st year students to review and practice OMM techniques.
- Osteopathic Finish Line = Students provide OMM treatments to race participants under the supervision of an attending physician and clinical fellows. Over 1500 treatments at >10 events since last spring.
- Community OMM Night, DMU Senior Health Fair, DMU Open House & Discover DMU = Student provide OMM treatments to community members visiting. OMM Faculty supervise and provide information on the benefits of OMM.
- 1st Annual DMU Back yard Olympics = Teams of 6 participate in fun backyard games on campus. A portion of the proceeds donated to the DMU Team at the Stepping Out for Diabetes Walk.
- Fund Raisers = Discount Cards, 1st year OMM Review Packet Sales, OMM Table Sales, Silent Auction
- OMM Journal Club = OMM Fellow provide topics on OMM related research
- DMU Club Day: 101 new members
I am probably missing a few events

Note: This post is not intended to spark a comparison of DMU OMM vs others, but rather just to give you a glimpse of some of the great events you can look forward to next year. Best of luck.

More UAAO info = www.academyofosteopathy.org/UAAO/

BTW…The DMU Men’s & Women’s Flag Football Teams defeated the Drake Law School Teams in the 2007 Malpractice Bowl today.

Welcome everyone!!

You guys will love it here at DMU. Shoot me a message if you have any questions, I know pretty much everything in the world....other than anatomy it seems lately..haha

toohot, you agree?

Congratulations to all of you DMU 2012ers! I thought I'd be the first DMU gal to welcome you folks :) Hopefully you're all excited about starting in the fall, & as the guys have said thus far, DMU truly is a great school ( Given the intensity of the curriculum, it's always wonderful to know that we have such a good support system here & such great resources ). Try to enjoy your time between now & the start of school & if you have any ?'s feel free to ask. Best wishes to all of you & thumbs up for all your hard work :luck:

I just got accepted to this class and I was so impressed with the facilities and folks at DMU when I interviewed that I had Thanksgiving dinner with my fingers crossed.

Just moving this thread along - I sent in my deposit yesterday! Still waiting on one more interview (NW track at Western as I could be back in the green misty lands sooner) but would love DMU!

Hi ya’ll. I just turn in my deposit for DMU’s DO program and was excited about moving to Des Moines until I thought about financing the tuition. I felt like I am going to try to fill an endless hole with student loans. So, I wonder if anyone has any great advice on financing the tuition, or any word of caution on applying for Stafford loan or military grant ? Thanks a million $$$$$$$

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I am looking for a roommate for fall 2008 or a little earlier. I am single, 24 yo male, no pets (but ok with having one), don't smoke, can tolerate ANYTHING BUT LOUD MUSIC/NOISE. I will be in Des Moines around 3rd week of January to look at apartments (which I hope it's not a bad time) If you are interested or care to join me on an apartment hunt, please contact me via email [email protected] Thanks!

Unless you are fortunate enough to have relatives wealthy beyond what I can imagine, just become familiar with FAFSA (if you aren't already) and realize that Stafford Loans (and the Grad Plus, if necessary) will take care of you and your tuition. Only do the military route if you truly want to be in the military.

I will be joining you guys this fall

UNTW, don't sweat the loans. SUre it's a ton of money, but it's an investment in yourself...and in your future income.

Once you make it through school, probably the bare minimum you'll make anywhere once you're done with residency is $150,000/year. The loans are a lot, but you'll be able to pay it off.

Like someone else has said, do NOT do military soley for the money.

Iowa also has a ton of forgivable loans if you're willing to stay in the state or especially if you will be doing a form of primary care in an low income area.

Oh yeah, congrats NDSTATE

Hey all,

Just got into DMU for Class of 2012, and I am stoked! I just had a question for any current DMUers: are all third year rotations ward based, or are some preceptor based? Quality of third year rotations is the most important factor for me when choosing medical schools (as basic science years are the same everywhere), so I wanted to know what rotations were like at Des Moines. Also, does fourth year still have 9 months of electives? Are there any required sub-i's fourth year?
-Pete

Some second years could probably answer a little better, but to my knowledge your hospital block is ward based, whereas your ambulatory block is more preceptor based. Our third years who stay in Des Moines are doing rotations with University of Iowa students, if that speaks to any quality issue for you. The clinical affairs staff are really working hard to keep moving rotation sites as close to home as possible for quality control reasons, so quality is a very important issue when it comes to clinicals at DMU. As far as I know, the only required clerkship fourth year is a second dose of family med, everything else is elective. You also get some selectives third year too.

I'll be joining you guys as well :D. Heading to Iowa in the beginning of February to check out some apartments and revisit the school. I live in Virginia, walking to Iowa didn't seem bad, so I should be there in a few days. Wish me luck.

I put up a facebook group for DMU Class of 2012 :)

Alright ...I've made a group for the 2012 class and I'm the only member...it doesn't work like that . A group with one person is not a group...so pleaseee at least a few people join.

So I'm contemplating getting a condo in Des Moines and I was just wondering how hte property value is there....Woudl it even be worth it to get a condo or is the value prolly not gonna raise at all and shoudl i jsut get an apt and pay rent for the whole time instead???

I was wondering on the sturcture of the leactures. Are they all stacked in the morning or spread out through the day.

Lectures occur in the morning, with the exception of OMM lecture which happens on Monday after lunch. If you don't have lab, you're generally done by lunch. However, you generally will have lab first semester (2 anatomy labs , 1 OMM lab). Second semester is a little lighter in the afternoon.

What is considered part of the "ambulatory" block? For third year, the only thing that I can come up with is family medicine. Shouldn't general surgery/peds/internal med/obgyn/psychiatry/neuro be all ward-based?

Congrats on your decision to go to DMU...you're going to love it there! Anyway, I'm graduating this year and have a townhome in a gated community in West Des Moines. It's currently rented to a non-med student but if any of you are looking to buy a home I would be glad to sell it to an upcoming DMU student. Message me if you're interested and I can email pics and details.

Hi Class of 2012! I think you've made a good choice with DMU! I am a DO 2010 and just recently bought a house and our realtor was fantastic. He works for the buyer and so you don't pay him anything but he goes to bat for you to get the seller to pay all of your closing costs, home warranties etc. He is great. A good buddy in my class just bought a house through him last week! I would highly recommend talking to him because he is very familiar with the medical student situation with money, time, etc. His contact information is :

Where is the best place to live

That is a tough thing to answer without knowing what you want out of a house/apartment.

West Des Moines is where most people live. It can be a bit crazy b/c there are a lot of people and a lot of traffic. The cost of housing is a not terrible but not the best. Good routes to school (I-235)

The next largest city is Ankeny. I think that this is a very underrated place to live. The cost of houses is about the same but less traffic and real speed limits (i.e. 45 and 55 MPH vs. WDM 30-35 MPH) Good routes to school (I-35 to I-235)

Johnston, Urbandale, Clive, Waukee, and Grimes are all very nice places to live. In general they are more expensive. Same problem with speed limits as WDM and no highways to school.

Altoona has good routes (I-80 to I-235) to school and very affordable housing. You have to put up with a lot traffice from the casino though.

I personally live in Polk City, which is my favorite. I like being outdoors and get feed up with traffic very quickly. There is not a direct route to school b/c the city sits between Saylorville and Big Creek Lakes. I was not too concerned about that b/c their are all highways around the city so I can go legally 55 (but normally 65). Also when would leave school, it was easy to just relax and go home.

But as you can see each city was qualities that are nice, feel free to PM me with a few things that you are looking for when you move and I'd be happy to help. I'll also try to get you in touch with a few students that live in that area or maybe selling a house in that area (We DMUers must look out for each other :D).

Is this guy buying you dinner for the free ad space? Did you expect a guy that is making 3-7% off a 100-200K sale to be rude? Closing costs are commonly included in sales and this is not a major selling point.

I still say buy from a graduating DMU student. You will be helping a fellow student and if you are buying, you'll be in the same boat in a few years. Also, the timing of the transaction will be perfect (they graduate and you move in), the price will be right (if they know you are a fellow student they maybe willing to work with you or even better they won't have to hire an agent), and you may just get some free books, notes or other goodies with the package price, who knows.

lol...... 100-200K? we got our house for way under 100K. I was just passing along some information that helped us in buying our house thats all.

Way under a 100K??? Do you live in a tent in the middle of the ghetto :D?

This thread is being completely hijacked, but I'll go ahead and add to the problem even still.

Why are people buying, rather than renting in the first place?? It won't be any easier to sell a house 4 years from now (or 2) than it is now. The housing market is in the hole, and while it may be a good investment (buy low, sell high idea) if you have 10-15 years, you really only have 4 years max.

So honestly, why buy right now? I'm not trying to be contentious, just asking an honest question.

I agree with the above. To add, let's say you decide you want to go to the Ohio Core for rotations, or northern Iowa, etc... Now you have to sell you house in a terrible market, and face the prospect of paying your mortgage and rent at your rotations site should you not be able to sell. It's not worth the hassle unless you've got a sugar momma/daddy who can finance the mortgage independent of your loans.

so i have 2 questions

1. how is it to live in downtown des moines (im from chicago and i wanan live in a populated, urban area) like a lot of ppl mention wdsm as being a great place but is downtown dsm a bad area or is it a nice place to get an apt???

2. i recall them saying that clinicals can be done anywhere in iowa so basically in my third and fourth years i could potentially do my rotations in iowa city or davenport right??? cuz those r potential sites???

thanks for the help

I think downtown is great. It's NOT Chicago, but that should be obvious. It might be a bit pricer, however. Nevertheless, there is definitely a lot going on down there and would be an enjoyable place to live.

Clinicals: Iowa City - the answer is basically know. You might be able to do a rotation or two, but UI does not allow us to do rotations in any of their affiliated hospitals in Iowa City.
Davenport - very much doable.

I'm going to buy next year when I go to residency. There are two ways to look at it. You can rent and to rent a house or a large apartment is will be 800-1500 a month. If you do that for 2 years you are looking at $19,200 to 36,000 in rent. If you rent for 4 years, that amount goes up to $38,400 to 72,000. So you need to lose 19,000 to 72,000 to be in the same boat as a renter.

You are looking at a national problem and projecting it on a local environment. If you look at foreclosures they are up, put they are way under the national average at 0.3% (http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080129/NEWS/80129035). Housing permits are down 18% (http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2008801290370) and that is why it looks like home sales are slow. If you are making 18% less than you would logically sell at least 18% less. And realistically most new homes are bought by previous owners so that means there would be a 36% drop in sales b/c you are selling the new and old home.

But to each there own, I bought b/c if I'm going to pay out, I want a chance to break even. I also like having a fenced in backyard, a garage, living by a lake with lots of walking trails and across the street from a Senior Tour PGA golf course. The other choice is living an apartment walking up and down stairs to take my dogs out at 10 pm, or having a herd of random kids scratch my car. I did the apartment thing my first year and wish I would have moved into a house sooner.

1. If you are single and like the downtown life it is very nice. The downtown is very clean and safe. I've actually heard that it is illegal to squat downtown (i.e. be homeless). It is also illegal to panhandle which stinks b/c that means no street entertainers. But it does keep the downtown very nice.

2. Defer to my esteemed colleague.

I completely agree that if someone wants to live in a home, then by all means go for it. That being said, it's pretty rare (especially in this market) to come out much ahead of renting. You have to also factor in upkeep costs, increased energy costs, etc. Unless you're renting a portion of your home to someone else, it's more than likely going to be more expensive to own than to rent over the course of 2-4 years.

But I'm purely looking at this from the financial perspective, while there are a number of other factors that ultimately influence someone to buy a home - many of them you already mentioned. I have a dog myself, and there are many days I'd love to have a fenced in yard.

Just wanted to add to this, We can do clinical at U of I affiliates, but not THE U of I hospital.
