DMU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just moved from California to Omaha and decided to visit the campus. It's a bit small but it's amazing! The school and program seem fantastic, this is definitely a top choice of mine too. Really nice students too! Good luck!

The campus is really small but this is an advantage in an Iowa winter. Plus, all of the major campus buildings are linked together with underground tunnels, so you can avoid the Iowa weather. So the small campus does have some advantages.

Their sim lab and fitness center are really impressive. Although, if the gym had a pool, then it would be even sweeter, but overall the school was impressive.

one does not have to travel in between classes/labs

I received the email stating my application was complete and I should hear back from them in 30 days well...30 days ago today.

Hopefully I will get an email today or tomorrow. :xf:

Me too.....

And I just got the invite.......!

I just got the interview invite!!!

I picked Sept 20. I wish I could have picked the first day available (Sept 2), but it will conflict too much with school and my prof was already a little bit miffed that I'd be missing 2 days of his class for my AZCOM interview. So I picked the only Monday since it's with a different prof.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to get there. I was going to drive, but that looks like it will be difficult now because I'll just be getting back from AZ late Sat night.

Interview Invited! Going on the first available day, September 2nd... WHO IS WITH ME!?

Boy, all the hotels on their list are pretty expensive. I don't know where to stay.

What's everyone else going to do?

I read last year's thread. I think they have something called "student host" (hospitality thing) or whatever (something like that, lol), maybe we can check it out.

I'm going on 10th. 😛 I don't want to rush myself and after you come back, you can tell us your interview experience :meanie:

Got the invitation today too!

Congrats and :luck: to everyone.

to all who got an invite to interview today: were you completed exactly 30 days ago?

Anyone who was complete in August and receive an invite?

Oh man direct flights to Iowa are over 600 dollars :wow:

1 stop is over 400.

Flying into DSM does stink. The airport is served mostly by small planes ie. American Eagle, Delta Connection, Midwest, etc. Expect to pay a little bit of $$ to get there...unless you travel out of one of the hub airports like Chicago or Detroit or you're flying from Florida because there are some non stop flights on Airtran or Allegiant Air to DSM which are pretty cheap.

For hotels, check out hotwire.com. Last year I used them and ended up not paying much and ended up right across the street from the airport at the Holiday Inn. It was ok, kind of an outdated property, but definitely livable. There were quite a few other discount hotels/motels on the street that leads from the airport into the city.

DMU is only like 10-15 minutes from the airport, a real easy drive/taxi ride. Last year I could have been back to the airport by like ~ 2:30, so don't worry if you book an earlier departing flight. Plus they are pretty reasonable at giving you one of the early interviews if you need to fly out early, just let them know as soon as you book you flight. I ended up driving around a little and exploring since I had rented a car and wasn't flying out until 6:30. Plus the airport is so small, security took like 5 minutes and there isn't much after security besides a very small food court, a bar, and a gift shop. There isn't much before security either.

You probably would save a little on the flight if you take a later interview date since the first dates are only a few weeks away so the flights are probably more expensive. I don't think that interviewing the first day versus in october will yield very different results since the class will be far from full.

I was complete late July and didn't hear back yet. I hope to hear back soon!

Just signed up for a September 3rd interview. Anyone else planning on going that day? I agree with everyone else, these flights are supper expensive. I live in Lexington, VA. A 17 hour drive isn't really an option.

Congratulations to all who got interviews!

Just submitted my DMU secondary and my letters go in this week, and I have to admit that I'm a little bitter that I missed the first interview dates... The DO that I shadowed went to DMUCOM, he loved it and it definitely seems like he got a top notch education. Let me know how everything goes!

Congrats to everyone with invites. I was hoping to be in the first group here since, despite being on the waitlist all summer, DMU is still my first choice. I hope they continue with the invites soon.

Got the invitation today too!

Congrats and :luck: to everyone.

Woohoo! I just my invite too. Actually I got it earlier but I was teaching a class until 8pm so this was nice to come home too 🙂

I'll probably be there on the 13th. Can't do much earlier because I have to finish teaching my class 🙁

I've never been to Des Moines, but I hear great things about the school!

Just added this school on aacomas yesterday after looking through their website and the city..

am i late in the game? since they are already handling out interview invites..=/ also i have 3.8sGPA, 28S mcat, CA resident, am i competitive for DMU? seems like it is one of the best DO schools out there and i am definitely interested in their program

thanks!

My secondary is still not complete, and I am interviewing on Sept. 3rd...they just asked me to try to get my letters in before the interview. weird, right?

Really? Your secondary still hasn't been marked complete? Nor have you sent in your LOR's? Are you the deans son/daughter? haha

You must have amazing stats if that's the case. Either that or you have something else they really like.

I got an interview invite and submitted my secondary last week (Though, I haven't sent in my letters yet).

I would love to go to this school... But, I am a Canadian applicant and DMU requires us to pay the 4 years tuition upfront before starting school >$200k 🙁 🙁

Congrats on the interview, but ouch!!! That is a tough bill to swallow...

All this interview scheduling is really driving me nuts and confusing me. I checked out flights on Priceline, and I could get a round trip ticket from ND for $672, but I could add a rental car and the total price would then only be $450. ???😕 Only problem with that was it didn't let you pick the departure times.

My main problem is that I'm flying home from AZ Saturday night, then I need to leave for Des Moines on Sunday for a Monday interview. Then I really should be back for a Tuesday class.

Going to Des Moines is so much more expensive than going to Phoenix, even though it closer. Would I be really crazy trying to drive the 10 hr trip home on Monday after the interview and then going to my class on Tuesday at 9am? Or should I work harder at finding some way to fly? ($672! 😱).

Find a way to get $675. You will be exited/worried/tensed after the interview so just get a flight and relex.

Personally i would drive it, but thats just me. I would have drove to mine, but the price of gas is relatively close to the price of the plane ticket. It would have been a 17 hour drive for me.

After looking online last night to find out more about DMU, i'm really psyched for this school. Hopefully it goes well.

Flights on the 3rd were just insane. I booked the following week for 200 dollars less. So sad wanted to go on the 3rd 🙁

I just booked my flight and it was under $300 (from CA, get there on 9th). And I don't have to pay for the hotel cuz I'm gonna stay with a current DMU student. 😛 Yay!

Mondo cheap, where'd you book it from?

DELTA!

My dad booked it for me last night (because I don't have money to pay for it 🙁) and I was shocked that it was that cheap! He was like "I know how to book cheap flights :meanie:"..I will ask him what he did and share the "secret" with you guys tonight.

Great, please do! Best I could do was ~$320 from Idaho (shorter flight than yours) and for that I'd have to fly into Ohmaha and drive for 2.5 hours.

I booked last night for September 8th coming from San Diego,CA the price of the ticket roundtrip is $307 total (continental). I booked at expedia.

Same thing happened to me. I submitted my secondary on the 5th, and got an interview invite on the 10th of August. They just asked me to have my letters in before I interview. It's something called FasTrack...not really sure how or why someone gets on that? Just scheduled it for september 16th!

This will be my first interview! Pretty excited...and DMU is my top choice for DO!

I asked my dad and he told me he just booked the flight from the official Delta website. I don't know why it was so cheap ($256)..

So no one is interviewing on the first day (9-2) with me? Y'all yeller?

I've been told these guys only review your file once. I'm afraid to tell them to review it since I got a 25, when admissions said their average is 27. Should I have them wait until after my Sept 2010 retake (scores in October)? I feel like that's pushing it pretty late at this point.

How much do you guys know about chances here with a 25? Any score breakdowns?

Ugh, I'm a little upset. I was going to pick Sept. 13th but had to figure out how I was going to get there first. I delayed choosing by one day and it was all filled 🙁

Looks like i'll be there the week after. I wonder why ticket prices to Des Moines are so crazy? I just decided to drive, it's only like 6 hours for me anyway.

Have you received any notifications from them, such as being wait listed, denied, or anything like that. If you haven't, then i wouldn't worry. You might not have got your application in on time, for the first set of interviews. If you were wait listed, I would definitely wait until you have retaken your mcat. Unless your application has changed since the first time they saw it, they probably won't find anything new in it.

i don't really want to be the only one to post scores, that seems kind of tacky... but feel free to private message me, and i'll give you a mini-bio

??😕

A lot of us post all our stats. <----MDapps

I don't think it's tacky. It's helpful to see what the range of norms is for people who are applying. It can help people to see where they might stand. I didn't feel comfortable doing it right away, but once I became more involved in SDN it seemed like the thing to do.

I wouldn't be too surprised if they only reviewed files once, seeing as they pretty much guarantee a response within 30 days. 27 is the average, a fair amount of matriculants will have higher and lower scores than 27. Don't read too much into schools' average MCAT scores and GPAs, especially since I've never seen a school that reports an average along with a standard deviation and median. If your grades (along with the other parts of the application) are solid, then I think you should go ahead and let them review your file unless you are very confident that your MCAT score will go up a lot. To summarize, I think a 25 should be fine if the other parts of your application are solid.

I got the secondary invite this morning and it was immediatly followed with an interview! Does anyone know how picky they are about a DO letter? I have an MD family med letter...
