I’ve been accepted to both DMU and UNE and am currently trying to decide between the schools after getting waitlisted at my only MD II.

DMU
Pros:
-Fantastic match list and board scores! As of now, I have a solid background in EM and am interested in it but I know this could change. It’s comforting to know I would have a good shot at something like surgery or anesthesiology if I went here.
-Great reputation as one of the initial programs
-The campus and facilities really impressed me and would be moving to an even nicer campus after our first year
-COL cheaper and tuition around $3k cheaper

Cons:
-Location. I’m from California and just cannot wrap my head around the midwest. I’m very into outdoorsy activities and DM doesn’t seem to offer much of that. I’m also vegetarian and I heard this location is pretty big on meat haha.
-Clinical rotations. DMU doesn’t rotate at any hospitals with an EM residency.
-Letter grades.

UNE
Pros:
-Location!!! I am in love with the campus at UNE and I know my mental health will probably be a bit better here due to the proximity to nature. I absolutely love Maine and New England and could possibly see myself moving there.
-Clinical rotation for EM. They have a year long rotation at Kent Hospital, which has a solid EM residency that attendings have recommended to me.
-Smaller class size with a lot of down to earth people in my interview.

Cons:
-Not as good of a reputation or board scores. I’m nervous that if I don’t end up going into EM, then I might be shooting myself in the foot for some of the more competitive residencies.
-Heavier focus on OMM and more mandatory classes.
-Facilities weren’t as nice.
-Starts end of June and I could potentially hear back from my waitlist as late as July.

Summary: I fell in love with UNECOM’s location and EM connections but am worried this could be the wrong move and DMU would set me up for more success. Just looking to hear more opinions, I know both schools are great options!

Go to DMU. There’s a lot to do in Des Moines and while UNE might be in a beautiful setting, I think it’s going to be a shock for somebody from CA anyways. You can’t pop into Boston very easily if you’re used to a bigger city and I’d say flying home is a lot easier from Des Moines.
