So I had already put down my money on VCOM but recently got an interview at DMU, so I was wondering what would be the pros/cons of going to DMU over VCOM. I know VCOM has more emphasis on primary care, but I'm really interested in other areas. Thanks for your help!

Why is it that everyone says oh, school X has more emphasis on primary care? EVERY school pretty much is out to train primary care doctors, except the schools that have a large physician scientist program. No school can force you into a residency you don't want!

On to other things...cost, location, 3rd/4th yr set-up, gut feeling about one school over the other, I think Des Moines is a bigger city, weather, and close to friends and family? Go over those topics and see how you still feel.

If you have not been to DMU before definetly go on the interview. DMU is awesome. The faculty is absolutely top knotch, the facilities are second to none, and the student body is (according to our genetics professor who has taught at 5 other med schools over the course of his career) the best group of future physicians he has been around. Of course I am biased but I cant imagine another school having more to offer its students.

I was accepted to DMU and it is an awesome school. This is where I would be going if I didn't get into my state school. I have never been to VCOM though. Go to the interview and you'll be able to feel if its right for you or not. Good luck!!!!

As for facilities, there is no better anatomy lab in the DO world, even at brand-new schools like LMU. We also have some amazing sim patients in our state of the art SIM lab.

I agree. Hands down VCOM has the better anatomy lab. I interviewed at both DMU and VCOM. I was waitlisted at DMU and accepted at VCOM. I have two close friends that are first years at DMU. I have heard the good, bad and ugly from them. I desperately wanted to go to DMU as my family is > 4 hours away (versus right now 16 hours and will be 18 hours from VCOM). After attending other interviews (LMU, PNWU, VCOM) I realized DMU is not all it is cracked up to be.

It is a GREAT school, do not get me wrong, but you have to go where you "feel" like you will do the best. I thank my lucky stars I was waitlisted at DMU, because I feel like I wanted to go there for the wrong reasons. Trust me VCOM = DMU. I don't care how "old", "established" or "respected" DMU is. That doesn't mean CRAP!!! It is all on YOU....your grades, your board scores, etc. VCOM does have some slight benefits over DMU (at least in my opinion)...such as the affiliation with VT, strong mission med commitment (great opportunities), anatomy lab, location (love the mountains), rural med options, community support, etc. DMU's benefits are their sim lab (it is AMAZING!), fitness center and well-known reputation. The only downside to VCOM I thinks needs improvement is the internal disputes it has (with curriculum changes and what not), I also wish the Dean had taken some time to sit down and speak to us interviewees. All the other schools I interviewed at included time with the dean except for VCOM.

As far as the VCOM anatomy lab being better than DMUs....it is hugely better. My interview group was walking down the hallway when DMUs anat lab was going on (we were not allowed in while the bodies were out) and the smell was OVERWHELMING (from a floor below we could even smell it, it was terrible). My friends have been told me how horrible the lab is also....each of them counted down the days until is was over. As for VCOM we toured about 10 min before an anat exam was about to happen. The prof was so welcoming he let us come in and tour the lab (all bodies were out and set up for the exam) and he took the time to talk to us for 10-15 min about the lab. He was so proud of how great it was. There was virtually NO SMELL. We couldn't smell anything at all....it was AMAZING!!

To sum this up it is like I said it comes down to where you feel the most at "home". You WILL get a feeling of which school feels the best to you. I honestly believe my indifference came across in my DMU interview and it was the reason I was waitlisted. There are other reasons I am PISSED at that school (I feel like my time was greatly wasted), but it hasn't clouded my judgement of it. It is really a great school, actually both schools are. I just feel like VCOM is a better fit for me....something during my interview day just felt "right" and that was missing at DMU. It may be different for you when you visit DMU. You will know right away! 🙂 Med school is ridiculously hard, when it comes down to it they all teach the same thing, so you have to look at what "other" things you want in a school and whichever one you feel most comfortable at.

thanks for all the advice and info! i will probably end up at vcom but i'm still going to my dmu interview this friday to check it out.

I am continually amazed on how much people put emphasis on the anatomy labs. Anatomy is one semester of med school and once it is over you hardly, if ever set foot in again. Granted I have never been to VCOM so I really cant compare, but I thought DMU's labs were much better than many other schools I interviewed at. 5 people per body, 30 inch flat screen tv's at each body where you have your lab guide and access to the professors dissection as he/she is doing it. And the smell is nowhere near as bad as one of the above posters mentions. I wonder what more you need (juice bar, couches).

If you are intersted in international trips DMU has 15 sites (not exactly sure where, I know for sure India, Africa) were many students travel. Also, DMU is one of 15 schools nation wide (along with Harvard, Mayo, Columbia, to name a few) allowed to send students to the World Health Organization in Geneva Switzerland to do research or internships if you so chose. So if you are intersted you should definetly ask questions in your interview.

Really though, get the feel for each place you interview at. Wherever you feel you belong when all is said and done is the most important aspect no matter how crappy/awesome/nice/old/new the facilities are.

Best of luck.

from what i saw:

vcom advantages
-affiliation with va tech- which is very important to me for gym facilities
-slightly cheaper
-rotations in va: which is near family
-weather

dmu com advantages
-excellent facilities
-state of the art anatomy lab
-gym is part of facilities but is small
-simulation labs more advanced

Just go check it out. I totally agree with the other posters who said that it will either feel right to you or it won't. On my interview day I felt like I could have fit in perfectly there. I also interviewed at a school that was much better for me location-wise and had an excellent reputation, but I knew halfway through the day that I would never go there. You just need to go see if the students and professors and learning style mesh with you.

anatomy lab is a nice omg look at this, come to our school cause our anatomy lab is so much cooler!!

Go read that thread about anatomy labs, how some schools have touch screens, computers, ect...completely unnecessary. All our need is a dirty rohen and netter and you're good to go..just follow your dissection guide.

The only thing that should matter for anatomy lab is how many students per body (4 ideal, 6 max) and ventilation (the more the better).

im still split ... dmu's facilities are insane and the town is cool but the weather is really its downfall
the weather is a very important factor. if u dont like the cold i wud say no 2 dmu

What??..I'm in Vegas...I don't see snow very often.😀
Here is a shot east from in front of the school. Probably 14" of snow at that point.

Not sure... I need to land the DMU acceptance first. I like the fact that VCOM gives access to Virginia Tech facilities though.

Gotcha. Well both schools will definitely get you were you want to be.

I seem to be in the same situation as you - accepted at vcom and waitlisted at dmu

I live in Mammoth Lakes, CA where we have already received 32 feet of snow. I will be matriculating at DMU next fall where the weather will be a godsend. Maybe all you softies should set your sights on VCOM. 14" of snow.....psssshh

Our labs aren't THAT bad. They are actually pretty nice with all the reference LCD screens at every station. And as for the stank.. you get used to it 😀. Plus you're only in it for a few months and then its over.
