DMU-COMS Class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There aren't any pictures of you guys, but your name and some contact info is in the directory. It would help if you knew the person's name, so you can search for it in the Student Lookup part. You guys are already in the birthdays section, from what I see 🙂

I know that there are planned activities for the pre-orientation week, but have any activities been planned for the nights of actual orientation week? I can't move into my apartment until August 1st, so unfortunately I will be missing all the fun stuff that is planned for the week before. However, I am excited to get out and meet people the week of orientation. Does anyone know how this works during actual orientation week?

Lucky....I spoke to my gf and she said she would be up for going out with you guys to catch a movie if the invite is still there and maybe grab a bite to eat. I told her that one of you may be able to help show around the school a little better than I could also. Let me know how that would be.

Josh,
Actually, we are going to see I, Robot on Friday. Does that work for you guys? We can catch a matinee anytime before 5pm, so it's only $5, and get dinner afterwards. Let me know 🙂

Sdiaz,
There is tons of stuff going on that first week of orientation. Even if nothing is planned you can still find second and first years who want to go blow of steam before classes get to hot and heavy. I know the week of orientation last year we were going out about every night to the bars and building that good ol' comraderie!!! So don't worry to much, there will be plenty of fun stuff to do when you move here too. 🙂

I think Fri. will be ok. I'll talk to her later and either give you a call or post online. Where will you guys be going??

We'll be going to Carmike Wynnsong I think we'll try to catch the 3:45 one, depending on cremaster's schedule.

Hey guys and gals,

The orientation schedule is up for your class on the portal. Log in, click on the documents tab, and it should be under the Students folder. If you have trouble accessing it, I can send it to you via email. Send me an PM. See you all soon.

dmak

Ok...I'll plan on 3:45 then unless I hear otherwise......where is good for dinner?? Would anyone be interested in helping show a little bit of the school....a little earlier in the day???

I'll be at the library pretty early tomorrow until it's time to go to the movie. I will most likely be on the second floor, knee deep in stuff, but if you come and find me, I'll be happy to give you a tour. Reception is variable in the Academic Center, so if you call me, I might not get it.

As for dinner, we can talk about it at the theater, depending on your moods. We're flexible.

I also am planning on going to the school tomorrow to work out and show lucky my final copy for my anatomy website. Lucky I think I'll be there around 9 or so maybe 10 since its my first day off since like memorial day. The gf doesn't really want to go to IROBOT, so we may be going it alone in the afternoon. I'm not sure about dinner for me, I think the gf wants to take me on a "date". We'll see anyways to all of you moving your stuff and getting settled welcome and I look forward to seeing you on campus.

Just like I posted on the other DMU string:

I want to encourage everyone to attend the Pre-Orientation events. They are a really good time, and can help you to make friends prior to starting school.

I made several friends during Pre-Orientation who I've kept, and see staying with for a long time to come.

If you have any questions, just ask.

Thanks,

Ray

Any players for next year? I'm not very good, but I love to play.

Hey everybody,

I'm flying into Des Moines on tuesday to move into my apartment at 3000 Grand, if anyone is bored and wants to do something just message me. If any other 1st years are there, I'm sure we can go find stuff to do in Des Moines and get very lost in the process.

I look forward to meeting everyone soon.

tkedave,
I have to work half days till wednesday, but if you want any info on the nightlife/etc. let me know. Have a safe trip getting here.

I'm getting excited. I already have hazing group assignments for all the 2nd years. I kid......for really.

I was wondering what the dress is for orientation. My roommate told me that it is business casual, but I hadn't read that anywhere. If it is business casual, does anyone really stick to it that week? Two weeks and counting...... 🙂

The only time they specify to wear something nice is when you take pictures, like a collared shirt to go with a white coat. People started out wearing nicer clothes, then it went down to shorts and T-shirts because you just don't want to be wearing a tie and khakis when it's pushing 90 degrees outside. But it's always better to be a little overdressed than underdressed, so maybe you can start out a light business casual, and then dress down as the week goes by.

Lucky is right, that first week most of the men were in khaki's and a nice shirt unless they specified ties. By the second week it was usually shorts and polos. By week three it was shorts and t-shirts. About a month I know I was wearing comfy clothes because I was starting to get tired and I really didn't care what I looked like showing up at 7:30 am for an anatomy test!! I'd definetly say dress nice the first week though, then feel it out, and it kind of depends on the impression you want to make also. Enjoy your two weeks of freedom.

creamfly,

I love playing racquetball and I am ok at it.. I will be up for playing.. I am moving into the 3000 grand on saturday (24th).. if anyone is interested in seeing bourne supremacy we can go for it...

it's freakin hot....wear shorts. I did the entire first week except for picture day.....the shirt and tie come out of the closet. dress comfortably....you do a lot of sitting for the most part.

dmak

It is freakin hot here right now....but I suppose it could be worse. A movie might not be a bad idea once a few more people get here. I have a question for some of the second years. I have a wedding to attend in Oct. and I've found a REALLY cheap ticket to get home but to get it I'd probably have to miss some of class on either the Fri. or the Mon. (either leave at like 11 on Fri. or return about 1 on Mon.)......which do you think would be better if I had to do one of those???

Do you have your schedule yet? We usually don't have exams on Fridays, as they are mostly on Mondays, but you never know. If you HAD to buy them now, I'd say go for missing Friday classes, but if you can wait until you have your schedule, that would be best.

A few of us are going to watch The Bourne Supremacy on Friday, but we're going up to Ankeny to meet up with some other classmates. One of our classmate's husband will be in the 2008 class, so if any of you would like to make the drive (it's only about 20 minutes), we're planning on catching the 4:20pm show and getting dinner afterwards.

I don't have the schedule....although some of the exams are posted on the calendar on the portal. I was just looking for an opinion because the ticket is like half (maybe less) of what they usually are with the prices until like Thu. I think and I'm sure you know you never know if the prices will get that low again. I actually went up to Ankeny...wasn't too bad....but I think a few more 2008 people may be trying to go to see the same movie on like Sat. or Sun. when they get here......or so they tell me!!

yea, josh.. u r right.. saturday.. I really want to see it, unfortunately I will be driving to des moines on friday.. so if people are around who would have missed the friday show, please let me know and I will go with them to see the movie on saturday or sunday...

avi

I will plan on going that sat. or sun.....besides I still have to go out and rent the first one since i haven't seen it...

I'm always up for a movie, but I don't know if I can go to this one without the gf, that might cost me another "notebook" viewing 🙁

You've seen it once? My wife wants to go see it. Is it pretty bad? I'm not looking forward to it.

Seth

I too was exposed to a "notebook" viewing......It's not that it was a bad movie.....but very sappy.....and very "chick-flick" like......and just when you thought that it had ended.....oh no there was more.....

well at least we contained the spread.......funny thing about these posts is we're about 3 feet from eachother.....giggling.

hehehehe

Why are you two sooo crazy all the time. I wasn't thrilled by the movie, but it there are worse things, like nuclear war or the first year of med school all over again!

Hey all,

Just trying to find something to do for the next few days. I just got in town Tues. night. Let me know if anything is going on. 😀

The next few days are just short of the fun of Pre-Orientation.

Try to RSVP for those things becuase it's hard to do reservations otherwise.

I did the Raccoon River one, and we went from 30 to 50 today....had to get the thing changed.

I bet that one will be a BLAST!

I'm stuck in Gerontology class now.....what the heck was I thinking?

BLAH!

You were'nt.

Did'nt they teach you squids not to volunteer for anything?

You are just an overachieving gunner, which we all know anyways. I'm in agreement with Portier, I never went to the pre-orientation things even though I was here all summer. It would have been nice to see a few people before they make you sit in rooms all day and be dressed up. I think I also am going to the events monday, wed, and friday so I look forward to seeing you all there.

It was great to finally meet you today, Thousandth!! Always nice to see another Californian in the corn state 😀

I concur.....there are at least going to be 2 cool 1st years. One even has a better laugh than I do at the movies.

dmak

We went to see Along Came Polly in a big group.

There's that one part where Debra Messing (Grace form Will and Grace) says some impassioned plea to Ben Stiller about how much she cares about him, and will be truthful to him in the future.

If you haven't seen the movie, she sleeps with a scuba instructor during the first day of their honeymoon.

I laughed out loud....hard!

Not as good as Dejan, but timing, I think, was everything.

Thanks Lucky I think it is only you and I. Probably something to do with the snow.
DMAC, I usually ONLY hear my laugh at the movies. People just don't think life is as funny as I do! Nice to know there is more of us out there.

Hey anyone want to help redo 2 bathrooms at my house?

anyone?

no...

damn!

If there is one thing you'll learn, its that manual labor volunteerism is rather low!! If I knew anything about it I would offer my services, but I tend to make things go worse than better when it comes to remodeling, and etc. Good luck!!

I agree with that statement. If you ever need some people to rip a wall out or tear your foundation apart....you know who to call.......cremaster.

Did anybody notice a certain man named Thousandth turn into something found in the Olduvai Gorge as the night wore on?

My boy mighta' been in the Navy, but he's a goddamn killer.

Nice to see the first years can party just as good as the 2nd's....

Too bad I have a headache in this meeting.....BLAH

Headache?...my EYELIDS hurt!

Glad to see the 2nd years have fun. I didn't want to believe that school was all study cause you know..

All Study and no play makes Thousandth a frustrated nympho....wait that's not right?!

damn..

I'm just glad I didn't get any drunk calls from them for a ride home. Once I'm neked in bed asleep, it's hard to get me to move...unless you push the right buttons..... 😴 😉

dmak

The trick is to have no dinner, 4 drinks early in the evening, and then stop. That way you don't get a hangover.

It also helps to go and danced at Vieux Carre.

However, I'm such a good dancer (better than Thousandth) that everyone else gets jealous.

Everyone going to Court Avenue?
That's really the best event!!

👍
