I'm in the class of 2010, so I will be oving to DSM this summer. It looks like I might br living alone since I don't have a roommate yet. Anyways, I have a couple of questions.
1. Does anyone know if any of the apartments near school come furnished?

2. If you moved to DSM by yourself, with no roomate, and no truck, how did you furnish your place. How do you buy a bed and get into your house by yourself? Things like this?
I've never moved more than about 30 minutes aways from my home so I am a little confused. Any help would be appreciated, as well as any general info like where you lived etc...
Thanks

1. None of the apartments (that I know of) on Grand are furnished. This includes Imperial, Windor Terrace, 3000 Grand, Grand Prix

2. That is a tough situation. I paid an extra months rent so I could get in early b/c my wife & I moved here the day after our wedding (started school the day after that). We picked a day in the month before then and got both our families to help out. My family lives only 2 hours away, but hers are ~4. They rented a trailer for some of her stuff. Everything worked out pretty well b/c btwn. wedding presents & things we had from college, we had more problems w/ not putting too much into a small space.

If all else fails & you know anyone around here, the promise of beer & pizza after the work is done usually works.

Also, if you don't want to move out to DSM with any furniture, you could check the portal classified ads for furniture that is for sale. You could also check second hand stores in Des Moines for furniture.

It looks as though you currently live in the San Diego area, so obviously that's going to cost a ton to rent a moving truck. I checked online, and it will cost you roughly a Grand to rent a moving truck. However, a rental trailer that you can attach to your vehicle would be much cheaper. It wouldn't fit as much, but obviously it could fit some of the necessities. I think a trailer would run somewhere in the neighborhood of 200-300 dollars. Obviously, it depends on what kind of vehicle you have, and if it even has a hitch, but I'd look into it. Check:

www.uhaul.com
www.pensketruckrental.com

I'm really starting to appreciate only living about 7 hours away, because the cost to rent a truck is drastically reduced (only about 300-350). Also, the advice on buying a lot of things in Des Moines was great advice. Moving, by far, is going to be the hardest part for a lot of people, since no one will have their first loan check yet. Plus, moving is just a pain in the ass to begin with.

Good luck!

Moving is a huge pain in the ass. I hate doing it so much that told my wife there was absolutely no way I was moving even down the street. We both want a dog, but I don't want one bad enough to move everything from our apartment.

The fourseasons has furnishes apartments.

From their website: "Efficiency are furnished, one and two-bedroom apartments are available furnished or unfurnished"
http://www.fourseasonsaptsdesmoines.com/

The efficiency would probably work if you're by yourself...

Give them a call for prices of furnished. Good luck.

In the long run, however, it may be cheaper just to buy furniture when you get to Des Moines.

Oh yeah... everyone check out your future place on rent.com. If you look at it and "find" it on rent.com they'll send you a $100 check if that promotion is going for your place. That's the case for the fourseasons. Try to cash in.

I'm limiting myself to only what I can pack in my little truck. If it doesn't fit I get rid of it or store it with the parents. Heck, we don't know where we'll be after two years anyways so might as well prepare yourself to move cheap.

Thank goodness I only live 3 hours away. My roommate and I are sharing a U-Haul, but I still plan on buying much of what I need once I move there. It will be much less of a hastle to buy your big items (if you don't own them yet) in the area..... 😳

HAHA!! We just reserved a 24' uhaul. The drive will be about 18 hours. Please kill me. 🙁
BTW, we should help each other move in when we get there. We won't be there until the end of July, but after that, I'd be glad to lift some furniture for ya'll.

I moved out to Des Moines with everything that fit in my Honda civic and got everything else here (the portal, second hand stores, and Walmart are great places to pick things up). I recomend The Four Seasons, and I know two second years who share a furnished apartment here. You could probably find similar furniture from the above places, however, this way you don't have to move it.
Happy home hunting. :luck:

Thanks everyone for all the info. This has been the first time that I have been able to get on the internet for a couple of days and I was so stoked to see the info you guys gave me. I'm so excited to get started and actually meet you guys in person.

Four Seasons doesn't ring a bell...what is the address?

Well, that is on the other side of Ingersoll so you could walk from there, but I would anticipate that taking ~10-15 minutes. Hope that helps.

Is the Four Seasons walking distance to school?

Four Seasons has two places,

641 35th Street which is 0.3 miles from DMU
Google map of the walk

and

3003 Woodland which is 0.5 miles from DMU
Google map of the walk

I believe the one on 35th is only 2 bedroom apartments, my wife and I will be moving there from our current apartment this weekend after I finish boards.

3003 Woodland is likely the place with the furnished 1 bedrooms. The manager, Steve, is a really nice guy and he loves DMU students. I know there are several who live at 3003 Woodland now and I believe they all walk to school.

Also, 3003 woodland has 2 pools (1 inside and 1 outside) both are decent, but obviously not Holiday Inn quality.

If anyone was wondering how far we're moving and wants to laugh at me, click here

Basically the only reason we're moving is because our current place is an old house that has hot water heat which is controlled by the apartment manager who is half polar bear. Ever gotten up to cram for a test at 5AM and seen your breath in your apartment? It sucks. 😡

There are a couple of places (Homemakers comes to mind) that will deliver any furniture you buy for a reasonable fee if you don't have a truck. Otherwise, you can always borrow one from someone in town if you know anyone or you can rent a U-haul cargo van or 10' box truck for $20 for 4 hours. There's a U-haul place south of Grand on 63rd about 3 miles from DMU.

OK, time to get back to boards.
