Both are great schools with a long history behind them.

(assumption based on your screen name)
PCOM is the largest civilian supplier of military doctors nationwide. Among its alumni is Lt. General (Ret.) Ronald R. Blanck, former Surgeon General of the Army and the current President of TCOM/UNTHSC.

There are frequent guest visits by military docs who give lectures and advice to HSPS students. Check out the website at http://www.pcom.edu/uniformedservices/index.html

PCOM is in Philly ... and with it you get the typical Mid-Atlantic weather pattern ... and traffic pattern. There are plenty of stuff to do during your down time in the city. And if you want, NYC is only a 2 hr drive, Atlantic City is 1 hr drive, Washington DC is 3 hr, and Boston is 4-6 hrs (depending on traffic, how fast you drive, etc)

During your first two years, you can interact with other medical students from Philly's other medical schools either through clubs or sports activity. The school regularly bring in guest lecturers who are professors at our neighboring medical schools.

Most of your core rotations will be done in Pennsylvania or New Jersey with some sites in Delaware. During your MS-III years, you will interact with many medical students on rotation from Philly's other medical schools. Because of location and history, lots of PCOM alumni can be found in residency at Temple, Jefferson, Penn, Christiana, Penn State, Drexel, etc.

Good luck with your choices. Both are good schools and both will educate you and turn you into a good doctor.

Your post highlighted exactly what I find in PCOM to be so attractive. That is what makes it a hard choice.

Eh, I value your opinion, but I feel that DMU is one of the best schools. Is PCOM on par? Definitely, but I wouldn't say its better than DMU.

Hi USArmyDoc

What attracts you to DMU?

If you are only 2 hours from PCOM you are most likely going to practice within that area. PCOM will carry you far, DMU will not. PCOM has a better reputation in the allopathic world espcially in this area. DMU is a good school but i wouldn't say it is well known on the east coast. This is from talkign with alot of the doctors I know. If you are going to specialize, PCOM is also the place to be. Lots of residency, access to great rotation sites. We don't have a hospital on cmapus but you can be at two trauma centers in 5 minutes. within 15 minutes you can be at several of the top hospitals in the nation and the world AND DO students can rotate there. Also the large class size gives you the advantage to have more groups, activities, socials etc, but yet the school and faculty make the place feel small.

Typical day: Except for mondays, first years rarely have class after 1. class is not mandatory except for OMM prelab and lab. Anatomy is required in the first trimester. There are also random things that you are required to attend. there is a 10 minute break every lecture hour. With scribe notes and mp3 and course packet there is no reason to go to class.

USARMY,

I am a first year at DMU and I can say that I really enjoy the school (as much as is possible for a first year). There is also a significant number of our students here on military scholarships. I know there is one Ranger in our class, a couple Navy, and at least three Air Force.

Everyone talks about how you have to go places for your third year roatations, but the school is great about working with you. Once you finish your core rotations, you can go pretty much wherever you want.

Bottom line for me was the DMU was just a great place to be. Good luck making your decision.

DMU's match list is also huge, and it will get you into almost any residency you want. And, yes, it is VERY well known on the East Coast and EVERYWHERE for that matter. It is the SECOND oldest D.O. school. I had the same problem, PCOM is only 2 hours away from me as well but I wanted to get out of the area. They have a lot in common and I would have to say base it on what school you most felt at home in.

LOL you are something else, fo' real!

hey there,

I am currently a first year student at DMU, and can answer some specific questions if you want. I like DMU, it is a really good DO school. PCOM is probably a bigger operation, and from what I understand has a very good regional reputation. If you like a city feel, and would like to have a bunch of things to do during your down time, do not come to DMU. I would not say that DMU offers a bunch of enterteiment. It may also lack some of the diversity that PCOM will readily offer. I am OK with this because I study most of the time, and most likely will not be rotating in the area anyways. Of course arguably the most important thing is quality of education, and I can only comment on DMU. I believe that I am receiving good education at DMU. Some classes are taught better than others, but this is to be expected (maybe...). We have a very descent passing rate on boards, so we must be learning something. Anyways, if you have specific questions, feel free to email me.

I may be jumping the gun since I just interviewed at PCOM but what is everyone's feelings about these two schools? I see them as two excellent schools. I do favor DMU, but I feel PCOM might give me the best opportunities since there is so much available to PCOM students in the surrounding areas. Plus, Philly seems like an awesome place. Any ideas?
