I'm currently deciding between Des Moines University and MSUCOM Detroit. I am out of state for both, and tuition comes out to exactly the same. I was hoping to stay close to home as my family, friends, and SO are all here (Chicago). Currently WL at CCOM so if I get in there I'd attend in a heartbeat. MSUCOM is pass/fail, but they have an internal ranking of 1 to 5. DMU is letter grading, but they also rank you 1 to 5 based on GPA at the end, and that's what residencies see. Both are exactly 5.5 hrs from Chicago. So on paper, the schools are exactly the same, and I'm very torn on where to go.

DMU
Pros
  • Campus is extremelyyy nice
  • Can come back to Chicago for rotations
Cons
  • I'm used to a big city, Des Moines is kinda in the middle of nowhere
  • No one I really know in the area

MSUCOM Detroit
Pros
  • Big city
  • One of my closest friends got in to dental school 5 minutes away, so small support system
  • Attached hospital
Cons
  • Have to stay in Michigan for rotation
  • Saw the Lansing campus and it was terrible, very old and run down. I'm visiting the Detroit campus next week so hopefully it's a bit nicer
  • Quarter system, so I start early June and don't get summers off

Full disclosure: I was accepted to MSUCOM and WL at DMU (withdrew from both).
I personally vote for MSUCOM because of their Statewide Campus System, current students told me it was very easy to find research, and their match lists are great. The early start in June was the only thing I really didn't like, but the students I talked to didn't seem to mind it much. I also heard they have excellent rotation sites and staying in Michigan is a plus because of those home residencies/hospitals.
