MSUCOM
Pros
Cons
PCOM
Pros
Cons
Summary: I'm quite torn; both of these are excellent DO schools and my goal of matching academic IM or anesthesia would be possible at either. I'd love to stay connected to the east coast and Boston --> Philadelphia makes a lot of sense. I'm not married to living in a big city though and kind of miss living in a college town. Based on pure vibes MSUCOM seems a bit more my speed, but PCOM/Philly seems more prestigious on the east coast.
Pros
- P/F Pre-clinicals
- Major research opportunities within the school
- Excellent regional reputation
- Established clinical sites and affiliated residencies
- Great board scores
- East Lansing would be a nice college town vibe.
Cons
- ~75% stay in Michigan or midwest
- No connections/family in MI or nearby (located in Boston, family in NH)
- Possible con: being in a huge university and sharing campus with undergrads
- OOS tuition (roughly the same as other schools for me tbh)
PCOM
Pros
- Excellent national reputation and history
- Philly rocks, closer to home, more like Boston
- Excellent match list at places on the east coast
- Established clinical sites and affiliated residencies
- Connections and opportunities around the city for research are abundant
Cons
- Graded pre-clinicals (yuck)
- Oddly low board scores recently and reports of fluctuating curriculum
- Limited research through the school (impression is you have to find it outside PCOM)
