Hey all,

I am just starting a new volunteering gig, and I'm wondering if I should put it down in my activities section or not as I have minimal hours from that gig at the moment, but will have quite a bit by the time of matriculation.

So the question is, do adcoms take projected hours into consideration as a part of an applicant's profile? I'd love to get your thoughts, especially from the likes of @Goro @LizzyM @gonnif!

Thanks in advance!

Doesn't hurt to list it if plans are already set. However, these plans can and often do change. Because of this, projected hours carry much less (if any) weight for me than hours already put in. Projected hours should not be used as a substitute for hours done at the time of application.

Nope. words are easy, doing is harder

I agree with the above. That said, if you want this to describe what you have planned for the year ahead, then it is useful information. AMCAS recognizes this and gives you the opportunity to show hours in the past and projected future hours.

You have the option of saving this activity for mention in Secondaries and future update letters in mid-cycle, as by then you'll have had more time to participate and accumulate hours.

I agree with the above. I have plans to beat LeBron James at "Horse" and never die, but until I accomplish those things my words aren't worth much. I recommend putting down the activities you plan to continue but don't project the future hours. Save that for an update.

If you start a new volunteer gig close to submitting AMCAS, you better be sure that you will be doing this activity come interviews. In that case, you're going to have to put your money where your mouth is.

I only put future hours for research, employment and my tutoring that I started almost 2 years ago. I figured those were the only things I knew for certain I would continue next year. The rest I didn't want to 'commit myself' towards things I might not continue pursuing.

If you have a good application and you are adding to solid record, it will be taken as more likely
If you have weak hours and applying based on projected, I look at a candidate as rushing, not ready, just cramming it in.

Thanks for your input! I've about 200 hours of non-clinical at the moment, working with children from single-parent homes. The new gig is tutoring/soup kitchen for at-risk youths in the city. Would this appear more positive or negative?

Thank you all for your input! @Goro @LizzyM @MemeLord
