Third year DO student who is planning on training in allopathic IM. As I've been searching for places to do an away rotation or two, i've found a common theme in that most of the decently competetive schools i'm looking into(East Coast, South, Midwest) only allow students from LCME certified schools to rotate through. Long story short, no DO's. My question is this...First, should I even bother trying to do away rotations at the Georgetowns, Emory's of the world and second if a website says only students from LCME affiliated schools need apply, should I personally make contact and try to plead my case on an idividual basis? I'm a fairly competitive applicant, 4.0 gpa, 129 USMLE, >97th percentile COMLEX, top of my class. Knowing my initial disadvantage of being from an osteopathic school, I'm curious how hard I should really search for top or 2nd tier schools to rotate through, if it matters much? Are my stats enough to interview? Am I screwed regardless? I don't want to go through the hassle of applying for an away rotation, paying for it all and find that it was a neat experience but in the end didn't really do much for me. In the osteopathic community, it's almost essential that you rotate through any place you might be interested in attending. I understand and have heard the arguments for and against doing so for allopathic schools but I was hoping to get some feedback specific to my situation and vent on how a seemingly uphill battle is steeper than I once thought. Thanks
