DO and not GP?

I was just wondering how possible it is to specialize with a DO? Im interested in these programs, but as of right now Im not so interested in being a GP... is that rare? is it difficult to get a residency thats in a specialty [right now im feelin' dermatology]?
and what is the difference between DO and MD residency programs?
