There aren't too many, ophthalmology residency programs associated with AOA, NRMP is the same way for allopathic residencies, only a handful of spots. So do DO's seeking ophthalmology residencies apply through OMP through the San Fran match?
The way OMP works and the ophthalmology residency programs work, they match you for your PGY-2 and beyond, but you're supposed to secure your own PGY-1 internship or residency at the same time you're applying OMP so although you'll know you're in, you have to do something for at least a year before training in opthalmology. My other question is does anyone know can your PGY-1 be an AOA residency or does it have to be an NRMP one, or does this depend on each individual program?
